No Boundaries

Ladysmith Black Mambazo proved itself pliable enough when the a capella group was heavily featured on Paul Simon's
Graceland. Other crossover collaborations have followed, but few work as seamlessly as this collection, which features old LBM songs, Zulu traditionals and European classical material done in collaboration with the English Chamber Orchestra. The rich vocal sound literally fuses with the classical musicians in much the same way as a classical choral group does. To its credit, the orchestra (and arranger Isak Roux) loosens up to fit the more oral/aural traditions of the singers--the music is less precise and reliant on virtuosity. The orchestra provides a particularly sympathetic counterpoint on the traditional "Awu Wemadoda" and is downright playful sounding on "Dona Nobis Pacem." Sounding as elegant and reverent, Ladysmith more than meets the orchestra halfway on the famous Bach choral piece "Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring." Making borders and boundaries irrelevant, this is a work of startling beauty that couldn't be improved upon. --

Let The Good Times Roll

This film is not a history lesson - although the viewer is treated to the official definition of the word Cajun and a bit about the Acadian people forced to flee their homes in Nova Scotia due to English tyranny. It is a glimpse into the lives of real people with real families, living in real communities in a state that has become increasingly stereotyped and commercialized.
We are introduced to the vast array of Cajun crafts, including brown cotton spinning and indigo dyeing and the forging of steel tools used in the construction of many of these people's ancestral homes. We get a feel for the music that makes up these people's lives - Celtic and blues influenced Cajun tunes, traditional blues, and even rock and country infused Zydeco. We see real festivals (though the occasional fanny-packing tourist makes their appearance since it is hard to film any festival in this state and not catch a glimpse of a least one) with real dancing, cooking, eating, dancing, eating, and more dancing.
The music seems to be the focal point here and it used to full advantage.
The film is a whirlwind of emotion and energy and will have you Toe-tapping all the way to Breaux Bridge and beyond.

Open Question: Are there a lot of Russian, Korean, Japanese or Indian expats in Taiwan?
Seems like there is an Indian community in Taichung:
http://www.therealtaiwan.com/indians-in-taiwan-diwali-festival-of-lights/1068
I see Russian hosts on Taiwanese Variety shows and I see a lot of Japanese in the Taiwanese music industry (like Aisa).
Then there are South East Asian workers too.

Open Question: What to expect at Bonnaroo?
First time Roo attendee for 2009.
1.) After purchasing my ticket, how much money should I expect to spend?
I plan on purchasing food, water & beer (w/ a cooler), cigarettes, possibly a grill and so on beforehand. (I assume all of this is allowed). I don't expect on spending too much money on souvenirs.
2.) How are the bathing facilities? What do they consist of and is there a charge? Are they public, private? How ridiculous are the lines?
3.) I'm from further south than Manchester so I'm used to the heat. BUT I've never been to a festival quite like this in the summer. What's the best way to keep cool? Wet rags, bathing suits, etc?
4.) Once you're on Bonnaroo grounds, are you allowed to leave and re-enter? If so, is there a re-entry fee?
5.) Comfort. From past experience, can you recommend anything that will help the whole camping aspect of this more comfortable (aspirin, sunblock, etc)
Any more suggestions would be great (like things to bring or even things NOT to bring).
Thanks!

Resolved Question: Do Peruvians enjoy thier cats?
Cultural Diversity
In September, despite an increasing chorus of complaints, Peruvians celebrated the annual Gastronomic Festival of the Cat in a village just south of Lima, serving a variety of feline delicacies (fried cat strips, cat stew, grilled cat with spicy huacatay). For the most part, according to a Chicago Tribune report, the dishes are made with specially bred cats rather than street prowlers, and are consumed for their health benefits, though centuries-old tradition is the likeliest explanation. Said one Peruvian, such cultural events "are our roots and can't be forgotten."

(1) invitationation Dear Dr. Mori:

The Metropolitan Rapid Transportation (MRT) is an inexpensive, fast and convenient transportation tool and you could look round Taipei at night.
After the symposium, I will make an arrangement about the post-symposium tour including the 6 flagship sites for you to visit the beautiful Taiwan. (2) energy crisis
One of the main problems of the world today is the energy crisis. Currently, as the industry and agriculture develop so fast, the consumption of energy such as oil, gases or coals is dramatically increasing. On one hand, energy is important for the economic development. On the other hand, limited and unrecoverable energy such as oil, can not offer us sufficiently. No matter how long could the oil use, we must face the crisis of energy now. We must face it and try to solve it.
With the usage of energy, global warming is a serious side effect. Cars, motorcycles and industry machines use oil and coals as the power. At the mean time, they discharge the CO2. When CO2 emission to air, the CO2 will cover over the earth. Because of this, the thermal energy from the sun can not difference and will increase the earth temperature. The disadvantage of global warming include storms, droughts, the dissolve of glacier and the changes of weather in the world.
To slow down the usage of energy and decrease the effect of global warming, we should save the energy and decrease the emission of CO2. In aspect of save the energy and decrease the emission of CO2, we can do some changes as fellow in our life. We should use the energy saving electrical equipments such as energy saving bulb and we should turn off the light when we leave the room. We should open the windows instead of the usage of air conditioning. The ways above could help us to save energy. Everyday we could ride a bicycle or take a bus to the office or school and if the distance is not too long, we can ta

Resolved Question: I am going to the Miami music festival (South Beach), can anyone recommend a good place to stay? Thanks?
Resolved Question: Made cookies for a booth/festival?
I made some peppermint swirls for my mom's booth at a crafts/art/everything show lol. They look great, and like red and white swirled sugar cookies. I followed the recipe exactly, and I've been cooking for 11 years at least (probably 9 completely alone) so I KNOW I didn't screw it up lol.
But.... They ended up being more of like a tea cookie (would be GREAT with hot chocolate). They aren't very sweet (like the sugar cookies they look like) and are kind of dry like tea cookies too. I'm in south Mississippi, and everyone likes SWEET stuff...
Should I just tell everyone "these are more of a tea cookie that would be GREAT with hot chocolate" or make a batch of sugar cookies (and add the peppermint and food coloring)?

Resolved Question: Where to travel in Yunnan in early February?
I am going to Yunnan with a female friend in early February or late January, since our abroad programs don't start until Feb 16. Where would you recommend going?
I know Spring Festival is a silly time to travel, but both of us need to travel before our programs, not after.
I spent a month in Kunming over the summer, and I have acquaintances in the city. However, they may not be there at the time since it's Spring Festival. Still, I feel most comfortable traveling in Yunnan province.
I've been to Dali and Lijiang, and her program is on minorities so she's going there later, so I hope to travel in the south.
Xi Shuang Ban Na sounds cool but touristy. Do you have any not-too-touristy recommendations? I am pretty good at Mandarin, and she speaks some too.
Transportation recommendations would be nice too.
Thanks!
