Thora Birch (American Beauty) is Liz Murray: homeless at 15, Harvard undergrad at 19. Based on a true story, the Lifetime movie begins when her mother, Jean (Kelly Lynch), a schizophrenic with a substance abuse problem, is placed in a mental institution. Liz and her sister are left with their father, Peter, who is also a drug addict. When Jean returns two years later, she's clean, but has AIDS (and will soon start drinking again). When Peter falls behind on the rent, they lose their apartment. He moves into a shelter, the rest move in with Jean's abusive father. Liz hits the streets soon afterwards. Once on her own, she gets serious about her studies and her hard work eventually pays off. Homeless to Harvard earned three Emmy nominations, including one for Birch, while Lynch (Drugstore Cowboy) is just as believable as her kindhearted mess of a mother. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Truth isn?t easy to find, and how could it have a name and a body and a personality behind it, not when it goes and permeates everyone and everything? But I?m not very welcome in most places. Y?see, people don?t see in straight lines. Their emotions tangle with their sense and suddenly something that was completely black and white looks orange and lime green and no one knows how to get out of the clashing iridescence that the situation has become. Except me. But no one listens to a truth teller. They like the lies better. The boy pulls his coat tighter around his skinny chest, but the wind cuts right through it as usual. At least it isn?t snowing ? yet. Trudging past the trees of the park, he steps carefully over every crack in the cement, imagining falling right through to China. The boy shudders a little ? his last experience with China was the undercooked Chinese food his father had ordered them last Christmas. Food poisoning wasn?t the most welcome present, but they got it all the same. He glances again at the empty swings, nervous. Walking home is never fun at this time of year, creepy gray sky and nothing but the crackle of scudding leaves and the occasional homeless guy huddled in a dirty parka to keep him company. The bus is worse though, full of shrieking girls and those boys with the wide, red mouths that spit out curse words, especially when the boy sits alone and unprotected ? he always does. But they enjoy him too much - he never knows when they?ll get off the bus early and when they?ll leave him alone, adding to this journey?s suspense. And now, they approach. Forming a little circle around the boy?s slender figure on the sidewalk, their cold grins spread like the puddle that no doubt would have formed beneath his feet by now if he hadn?t had a little rendez-vous with the toilet a few minutes before. They start quietly, ?Hey hey, freak boy, whatcha doin? out here?? And when he doesn?t respond, ?You just bein? unfriendly to us.? ?Ooooohhh, he?s too good for us, can?t even sit on the same bus as us, right, freak boy?? He keeps walking and the circle keeps pace with his steps, some lumbering backwards just to keep their malicious eyes on him. ?Freak boy, you know we just wanna be friends?? says one, stretching out the word friends until there?s no doubt that they have no intention of that. ?Whyntcha show us your house, huh, freak boy? Isn?t that what friends do?? I follow just behind, another invisible bystander who really can?t do anything. The circle is closing tighter around him and I see him steeling himself to make a break for it. His house is two blocks along, and if they see him go in they?ll never leave him alone. That much is obvious. Three?.two? ?Hahaha, freak boy?s ignoring us. Is that what your mommy toldja to do when the mean boys got on your case?? one. He ducks under a sweatered arm and makes a run for it, heavy backpack weighing him down as the boy sprints for the alley that leads to his fire escape. I applaud into the air, proud of his quick getaway. They?re not impressed, however, watching him run with nonchalant sneers. They all know that there?s the next day, and the next day, and the next to get him. The tightness in his chest is still constricting his lungs but he?s not gotten today, and his heart bangs with mixed adrenaline and relief as he pounds up the iron steps. It?s freezing in the boy?s house, almost as cold as it is outside. He doesn?t bother to take his coat off as he slides through the handily unlatched window. I slip in before it slams shut. Heaving a sigh of (temporary) safety, he dumps his heavy bag on the table, steadying it almost automatically as the leg wobbles. He gathers peanut and jelly supplies as per ritual and dumps them on the cuttingboard. His father has forgotten to buy pre-sliced bread again, and he casts about for the bread knife. It must be in the broken down dishwasher, so he rips off a hunk and spreads the red and brown creams awkwardly across the mountainous landscape of the bread. Looking kind of like a wild beast, he ambles back towards to the table, huge bites vanishing quickly. Nothing like a quick bout of terror to get anyone?s appetite up. Wrestling his math binder out of the backpack, he settles into fractions, crumbs spotting the page. ?Hey, Brandon,? his brother mumbles as he slouches in. The boy looks up at him, pants hanging low, blonde hair even messier than usual and jelly all over his hands. He has the same after school ritual as my boy ? it doesn?t quite gel with the tough guy image he?s obviously trying to cultivate, but none of his friends ever come to the apartment. I was online the other day and found a page where people are trying to sell their kidney for money. I got to be honest here, given my current financial situation it's not something I would rule out. It does how ever seem a little wrong, don't you think? I mean putting a price on someone's life. I would like to think that I would give my kidney to someone who needs it to live before I would make them pay for their life. That's like saying "Give me $10,000 or I will let you die". But I guess when you are in need you do what you have to. So anyways, If you Google the subject "Where can i sell my kidney", "Can i sell my kidney on ebay" ect. you might find it pretty interesting that people are really trying very hard to sell their kidney's online or any other organ for that matter. They describe their age and health in hope that someone who truely needs a kidney will buy it from them. This country is desperate! What do you think? LA County has declared war against the managed homeless cat population living at the abandoned Rancho Los Amigos facility for over 40 years. High school is a failed experiment in preparing young people for the adult world. All high schools in the country were built around 1960 and were designed to hold about half as many students as they currently do. Nothing seems to work quite right in a high school building. The heaters only work during the summer and the air conditioning only works in the winter. The asbestos insulation has all fagged out and the building becomes an oven or a meat locker, depending on the time of year. The plumbing is usually a disaster in high school, with drinking fountains never working but toilets that never stop running. High schools are usually poorly run by a team of out of touch assholes, also known as Principals, counselor, teachers, and ex-Marine drill sergeants (gym teachers). These people seem hell bent on destroying all hope for students through tedious testing, poorly planned projects, educational videos made during the Truman Administration, and text books that mention the Soviet Union on every page. High school is also the place where the stress of growing up and the stress of fitting in join forces to destroy even the strongest among us. Most of High school is not spent learning but involves trying to find friends who aren't complete douche bags, trying hook up with people of the opposite sex unsuccessfully, combing your hair, buying cloths in the effort that someone will notice you, working out so you will not get your ass kicked everyday, trying desperately to get rid of the zits that have taken over your face, driving a car that a homeless person wouldn't piss in or riding on an over crowed bus while choking on diesel fumes, while people you don't know make fun of you worse then your friends do, and on top of all of that, you must act like nothing is wrong in your life. A Dementor's last and worst weapon is called the Dementor's Kiss.
