Classic French Songs
What makes a wonderful song? My own view is that a great song is that magical combination of a good poem with good music, resulting in a whole that is greater than the mere sum of its parts. This is a collection of some wonderful songs of France, both "classical" and pop, dating from about 1800 through the 20th century. There are songs of nostalgia, playfulness, tragedy, loneliness, irony, and mystery, mostly involving love in its myriad guises. It has been an adventure -- exploring the nuances of the language and the music. I hope you enjoy listening to these songs as much as we have enjoyed working on and performing them. Eileen Mager.

Educating Rita
Michael Caine and the knockout Julie Walters deliver a pair of wonderful performances in this endearingly bittersweet tale of a boozily burnt-out professor's tutoring of (and subsequent tutoring by) a free-spirited cockney hairdresser determined to improve her lot in life. The basic plot won't exactly surprise anyone who's ever seen a movie before, but the ace cast (particularly Caine, who's rarely this subtle) continually finds new directions to spin off from the rather rote path. Although the end result is perhaps just a little too convinced of its own adorability to attain classic status, this remains a rarity in the genre--a feel-good film that earns its emotions honestly. A nice change of pace for director Lewis Gilbert, who is perhaps better known for his contributions to the James Bond series. --Andrew Wright

Tell It Slant: A Conversation on the Language of Jesus in His Stories and Prayers
Just as God used words both to create the world and to give us commandments, we too use words for many different purposes. In fact, we use the same language to talk to each other and to talk to God. Can our everyday speech, then, be just as important as the words and prayers we hear from the pulpit? Eugene Peterson unequivocally says Yes! Tell It Slant explores how Jesus used language he was earthy, not abstract; metaphorical, not dogmatic. His was not a direct language of information or instruction but an indirect, oblique language requiring a participating imagination slant language. In order to witness and teach accurately in Jesus name, then, it is important for us to use language the way he did. Part 1 focuses on Jesus words in everyday contexts his teachings to the crowds, the stories he told, his conversations with his disciples. Part 2 shifts the focus to Jesus prayers the words he spoke to God the Father.
Petersons Tell It Slant promises to deepen our understanding of Jesus words, strengthen our awareness of language as a gift of God, and nurture our efforts to make all of our speech convey a blessing to others.

Inter-Act: Interpersonal Communication Concepts, Skills, and Contexts Includes Inter-Action! CD
Designed to help students understand communication processes in relationships and develop specific skills needed to create and maintain healthy ones, the eleventh edition retains the features that have made this book so successful: a theory driven skills-based focus, an accessible tone and presentation, and numerous useful pedagogical tools. Cynthia Berryman-Fink, a new coauthor, brings fresh insights to this edition, which has a contemporary feel that will resonate with today's students and professors.
Well-written and lively, Inter-Act features numerous activities that enable students to relate their everyday experiences to their studies in communication. The text illustrates how cultural, racial, and gender differences as well as electronically mediated messages alter what we should do to communicate effectively. It also emphasizes the importance of ethics in communication and encourages students to develop their analytical abilities as they think critically about the concepts presented in the text.
NEW OR REVISED IN THE ELEVENTH EDITION
* New: Information on relational dialectics and turning points, coordinated management of meaning, the language of cyberspace, intergenerational family communication, and communicating in a diverse workplace.
* New boxed features: "The Gray Zone" offers alternative viewpoints on aspects of interpersonal communication, while "Learn About Yourself" boxes provide students with short surveys to help them understand their own communication styles.
* New: More than 50% of the "Diverse Voices" selections, "Inter-Act with Technology" boxes, and "What Would You Do? A Question of Ethics" boxes are new to this edition.
* Expanded: The in-text CD now features a complete student workbook with chapter outlines, key terms lists, self-tests, quizzes, and numerous activities designed to help students master the material presented in each chapter.
* Revised: The Instructor's Manual/Test Bank (available in both print and electronic versions) contains more effective teaching aids and additional test questions.

Open Question: how to stop unauthorized spam into my yahoo groups-?
I have a yahoo group, and am the moderator.
Dec 23 someone joined, and is now spamming the list.
The messages are supposed to be moderated, but they appear to have figured out how to pose as moderator, or to act as if they can approve the message somehow.
As the moderator, I am not approving the messages, yet they are getting through daily. I have members jumping ship like rats...
I have been trying to contact Yahoo but we're not speaking the same language apparently and can't seem to help.
I have booted this person off of the list, yet the emails keep coming.

Open Question: Why turkey is helping gaza against israel?
what happened to em?they were allies with israel all the time..what turkey is trying to prove?they wanna get arab countries' aid against kurdish in iraq?do they want to show U.S that they could be their biggest challenge in the ME if U.S didn't give them what they want?do u think turkish ppl are with or against israel's rights to exist?do u think we'll be having problems with turkey in the future?what about the new russian ships travelling to turkey and their traning with the turkish army?
and plz don't say turkey gives a fuck about human rights in gaza..it's been like this since 1948 and turkey hasn't said shit plus we all know about turkish goverment , we all know about the armenian genocide and we all know about the rights of 15-20 kurdish ppl in iraq who can't talk their language or sing in public?
are we trying to create a kurdish country which would be 1 of the richest countries in the world and we could control it easily plus we would be surrounding russia more effectivly..should we take this risk we will lose 1 ally which's turkey but in exchange we will have much richer ally and use it against iran and syria and press on them so they would be acting the way want..

Open Question: Can someone please edit this essay.?
An ethical core value that is important for social workers to have is integrity. This is the standard of deciding what is right and wrong and what each of us ought to do usually in terms of rights and obligations, benefits, common good, least harm, and social justice for all individuals. These are all central to what social workers want to create en equal Social workers must adhere to the ethical principles of integrity on maintaining a high code of behavior, honesty, trust, being respected, and having a sense of justice and fairness. Being honest and having integrity can be guide for everything that one does. What to do when no one is watching, knowing the difference between doing the right thing and wrong thing, and keeping your word are all examples of integrity. These are attributes that social workers should practice as professionals and in their everyday lives. Having integrity is respected both in personal and professional relationships .One needs to display a certain amount of sincerity and morals when working with clients. A social worker, specifically, must uphold the highest level of morality and maintain that level when other people try to challenge their views and test their wills. When social workers are challenged with ethical situations, they have to maintain a sense of integrity to their profession, ethics, and principles. We need to understand that clients have different values and beliefs from our own and as social workers we have to be open to learning about these differences and behave in an ethical manner.
Diversity means different things to different people. For me, diversity is and never was a bad thing. Diversity is the difference in the decisions we make, and the way we think, act, behave, and choose to live our lives. For this reason, I respect every individual for who they are, regardless of our differences. Some people make excuses to discriminate based on differences such as race, culture, and ethnicity. Instead of discriminating, we need to be involved in celebrating diversity and differences. We can do this by being open to learning from individuals of other cultures, and through understanding the value of diversity itself. For example, I am biracial. My mother is Mexican and my father is Black. I was raised in a community in which the population was mostly Spanish. From that aspect, I learned to speak fluent Spanish by my family as well as from my own culture. My cultural background has therefore provided me with the capacity to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures. When I moved to California, my viewpoints were broadened by other cultures, and I was more open to learning from people of other cultures. I am convinced that if we appreciate and value differences then we can recognize the strengths between different cultures. I am culturally competent in my language ability to relate to individuals who speak Spanish in that I understand their culture and therefore can meet their needs and assist them with services, resources, and information in their language choice that aims to enrich their lives and well-being. Above all, if we continue to be a voice for the most helpless in society, then we can change the inequality that is prevalent among the poor, vulnerable, and oppressed individuals, and help them to have more dignified, productive, and fulfilling lives.
One of the core, ethical principles of social work is that all people have the right to be treated with respect and dignity. We must ensure that each individuals? human rights are upheld. Because each person has a right to be treated as a whole person, this requires us the professional to not only be concerned about the individual, but also their family, community, and environment. Social workers help address problems of people who are disadvantaged and poor. They help them gain access to resources and support that enhances their well-being and helps them to be self-sufficient. Social workers must come together to change the social conditions that contribute to economic inequalities by challenging unjust policies and practices at every level. This includes making sure that those in need receive resources first, and that resources offered are distributed fairly.
Social workers are concerned with well-being of individuals who are the most helpless in society. They work with women and children, the elderly and disabled individuals who are more likely to live in poverty. Not having access to resources, transportation, education, employment, and child care can make it difficult for them to fully participate in their communities. Being able to work and provide for our needs and those of our families is essential to our well-being. Individuals susceptible to living in poverty should not be deprived of their basic necessities that can sustain their lives.
Before we can address changes for those living in poverty, first, we need to look at clearly what is causing poverty. There are many

Open Question: How far has Artificial Intelligence progressed? What would be considered cutting edge right now?
AIs that I have seen tend to act intelligent rather than truly understand. They can mimic language by following patterns created by smart programmers rather than 'learning' the language. There is a group of thought that says we should strive to first make an AI that evolves like a baby and train it into adulthood. What has been the biggest road block so far?

Open Question: What is your take on this quote on how language shapes our perception of race?
"Some may blackly accuse me of trying to blacken the English language, to give it a black eye by writing such black words. They may denigrate me by accusing me of being blackhearted, of having a black outlook on life, of being a blackguard-- which would certainly be a black mark against me. Some may black-brow me and hope that a black cat crosses in front of me because of this black deed. I may become a black sheep, who will be blackballed by being placed on a blacklist in an attempt to blackmail me to retract my words. But attempts to blackjack me will have a Chinamen's chance of success, for I am not a yellow-bellied Indian-giver of words, who will whitewash a black lie. I challenge the purity and innocence of the English language. I don't see things in black and white terms, for I am a white man if there ever was one. However, it would be a black day when I would not "call a spade a spade," even though some will suggest a white man calling the English language racist is like the pot calling the kettle black. While many may be niggardly in their support, others will be honest and decent-- and to them say, that's very white of you!"
*As I read this, I started racking my brain trying to come up with exceptions to this -- examples of using black as an adjective in a positive context, and I couldn't think of a single one.
And it's also interesting to note that in contrast, every expression in the English language where white is used as an adjective is associated with positive imagery -- ie; "white knight". Here again I also tried to hard to think of an exception where the use of white as an adjective was associated with negativity. The only one I could think of was " a little white lie". Here you have an act of deceit or dishonesty presented as being benign and therefore not really harmful. There's also the expression "whitewash" which does the same thing -- describing an act of deception or dishonesty that isn't all that bad.
What is your take on this?
Adam S: The subtlest of differences between two words can make the difference in terms of meanings. While in everyday speech I don't dwell so much on word choice, I DO think it has an impact. Consider the difference between these two sentences:
"Her face was exposed."
"Her face was revealed."
Thesaurus.com has them as synonyms, but they have different "feels" to them and different connotations.
So I think word choice is never trivial, and if there are themes in our language we should examine them and try to figure out their causes-- and their effects.

Open Question: Why is my sister acting this way? Can she control it or not?
Ok my family moves around a lot and my sister has a naturally not very outgoing personality. She has a hard time adjusting to new situations and especially making friends...she has never had a lot of friends [she's 11]. She gets really angry really fast and tries to blame everything in life on my mom and it makes my mom miserable...we have no control over moving and she hates to think that she is making my sister that way. My sister just loses her head and goes absolutely insane. Then in the morning when it's time for school, she refuses to get out of bed...my mom cannot physically make her get up so she misses school. And she does this day after day and my mom can't make her...she can't just drag her out of bed! And my sister is really smart, especially with math...she plays 2 sports and is taking 3 languages... but she is sooooo antisocial. I hate to say that as I know that disorder actually involves violence but she is not social at all...and doesn't get along with people. It's like she feels like she is too good for them and that nothing anyone does is good enough for her.
Please help I hate seeing her this way!!!
Thanks!

Open Question: How do I remove a virus, possibly Trojan horse?
I need some help... I have Windows XP and my computer has been acting funny lately. Whenever I was on the internet, there would be a whole lot of pop-ups that would come up at random times and it was that Anti Virus 2009 thing... I never downloaded it, but that's what I originally thought was the issue.
I currently have Windows Live One Care installed on my computer (the trial version) and it hasn't picked up anything. However Internet Explorer will not work. Every time I click on it (I'm using Fire Fox right now) it gives me one of those lovely "Program not responding" error messages.
Also I noticed in Task Manager that iexplorer.exe will randomly pop up using 30 or 40 thousand K's even if I never clicked on the application itself. Some other funny things in Task Manager- svchost.exe will be running and there is about 7 of them. None of them say my user name is running them though, they all say SYSTEM or NETWORK SERVICE or LOCAL SERVICE.
Plus there are two copies of rundll32.exe. Now I got into the System Configuration Utility (Start menu... Run...msconfig) and went to the start-up tab and noticed that there were these really weird names there that I had never recognized before. They look almost like they're in a different language. Here are some of the names: biniyogi, hajajepo, nikarili, fupilito, kuwovogi and divimuvo. I disable them when I see them and all of their commands have the folder name in the system32 folder and then a comma and then a lowercase letter.
I went looking for them and couldn't find them, however I did find a hidden file called "beyivina" and it just said "File" it didn't say what type of file and I deleted it and every time I deleted it, it just came back again and whenever I disable those funny names in the System Config. they just come back with 2 or 3 new ones.
If somebody could tell me a) what kind of virus I have. I think it is a Trojan horse but I could be wrong and b) how to remove it. Thank you!
