HISTORY OF PHOTOCHROM PRINTS

The photochrom process was initially developed in Switzerland and was spelled without an "e", so the correct original spelling was actually "photochrom". Once the process was introduced in America, the "e" was added to aid pronunciation. A Photochrom is a color photo lithograph, produced from a black-and-white negative. The final prints were created using different color impressions from multiple lithographic stones. The stones used by the publisher Detroit Photographic Company were imported from Bavaria and coated with a special Syrian 'asphaltum' substance that would be chemically sensitized to light, put in contact with a photographic negative, exposed to the sun for up to several hours, then "developed" in oils of turpentine. A separate stone would be made for each color to be used. A minimum of four stones and as many as fourteen stones might be used for a given image.

The far side of the Moon, also called the "dark side of the Moon" was unknown to humanity until the Luna and Lunar Orbiter pictures were returned to Earth.

Even since then, its nature has puzzled researchers. Now we know that a giant impact struck the near side with such force that it created the “near side megabasin”, opening the way for floods of mare and sending vast amounts of ejecta to the far side. The Far Side of the Moon explains this event and also documents the appearance of the features of the far side with beautiful pictures from Lunar Orbiter.

As in the previous volume, The Lunar Orbiter Photographic Atlas of the Near Side of the Moon, the author has taken the original images and cleaned them of system artefacts using modern digital image processing. The best photographic coverage of the far side of the Moon has been the 150 photos taken by the Lunar Orbiter series. The other sources are pictures taken by the Apollo Command Module, which were limited to the equatorial regions, and the Clementine mission, which took pictures at a high sun angle that washed out the topography of the features. Until now, the far side Lunar Orbiter photos have only been available with strong reconstruction lines, but appear here for the first time as complete photographs, unmarred by imaging and processing artefacts.

Also, this is the first book to explain in detail how the far side was deeply covered by ejecta from the Near Side Megabasin and modified by later impacts.

A CD-R accompanies the book, and contains all the enhanced and cleaned photographs for use by the reader in screen viewing, lectures, etc..

----Brief Introduction---- I've been writing a fantasy/sci-fi series for adults (more fantasy than sci-fi). I've written the rough drafts of two of the hopefully six books. This series concentrates mostly on character development and there is a strong focus on inner struggle. The series takes place on one planet/world, and all the events in the story contain one kingdom on this planet. The main characters are not exactly humans. They are a different race that lived in the land long ago, but only a remnant is left now. We?ll call them ?Race X?. They look the same and have the same emotions, but they have enhanced senses. For example they can sense when another person of their race is near, and they are much tougher and difficult to kill. Before I get to my question please remember that I am not giving you a complete summary of my series. I will say only what I need to say to explain my question. I'm saying this because I have asked questions relating to my work on internet forums before and people seem to assume that everything I've written in my post is everything that is in the story. They'll say things like "u need 2 devellup yur story moer" even though they haven't even heard 1% of the story. This doesn't mean I don't want constructive criticism. It just means I want the criticism to be about the specific aspect that I mention in my question. ----Shrines & Powers---- In the story, one of the central characters (we?ll call him Jim), who is one of the remnants of Race X goes to shrines built by his ancestors for religious purposes (the deities, however, were not real, as there is no spirituality in the series). The shrines have intricate designs engraved on the walls. Touching the design on the wall will activate latent abilities in the character. I have not decided exactly how these work. I?ve been thinking of them as otherworldly technology, and by otherworldly I just mean the fictional world where the story takes place. The technology is not computer based technology. It?s more like a sort of energy that goes into the brain and opens up neural pathways that allow the abilities to be used. It makes sense that there would be different kinds of energy in a world different from our own, right? It also makes sense that an ancient and advanced civilization (Race X) would be able to harness it. Again, I haven?t exactly decided on this so if you have a better idea let me know. There are 11 ?powers? in total, but only 7 shrines remain (the others were destroyed). Jim gets 5 of them over the course of the 6 books. The first one he gets is not really a power but a mental map of the shrines. It is more like information than a complete visual picture, but it gives him good ideas of where the shrines are located, and he can sense when he is near them. Another power he gets is the power of prophecy. It lets him see events in the past, present, and future. He sees these ?visions? at random times, but he has to be seeing or thinking about something connected with the event. For example, he sees a house and then sees a vision of someone dying there and gets the idea that it will happen in the future. One of the first things he saw was how the kingdom would be destroyed. The ?vision? was triggered by him merely thinking about how the kingdom might get destroyed after a friend of his was talking about it. His thoughts triggered the vision because they concerned the same subject. -----My Problem---- The problem I have with all this stuff is that these powers are hard to explain unless you use magic or something spiritual, which I prefer not to do. Like I said, I had been thinking of it as energy, and I thought that could excuse everything the same way magic can, but now I am reconsidering this. Of course, otherworldly energy can explain some things. The fact that the characters are another race (Race X) can also explain a few things. My main problem is the whole seeing into the future thing. It is a difficult thing to explain if you don?t explain it with magic or spirituality. The way I would explain it is that the future is not exactly set in stone, but the power allows Jim to see what will happen in the future as a sort of vague memory. It is NOT merely a possible future; it is THE future that would happen unless someone who knew the future acted upon it. Of course, all that really doesn't explain it as much as it should be explained, so I could use help with this. I don?t exactly have immense scientific knowledge, so I don?t really know much about theories about time, which probably means I should study it. But I know it?s been used in fiction. The show HEROES has a character that can paint the future, which suggests that there is an actual future that can be predicted. And before anyone asks...no I did not get my ideas from HEROES. I started developing all of this before the show came out. OK, now you know what you need to know to help me out. What do you think about all that? Do you think that the ability to see the future is not possible unless it is explained by spirituality or magic? How would you explain the ability to see into the future? What?s your take on the whole energy thing? What do you think about Race X and their abilities? Remember, this is not a summary of the book in any way. It's a question about one aspect of the book. It is not in itself the main storyline. I just want to stress that the series does not consist entirely of the characters scampering around looking for ancient shrines. I think the main thing I need help with is the idea of a future, but of course I would also like your opinion on the whole energy thing. Do you think it works? (more...)
