The New Cold War: Putin's Russia and the Threat to the West
The New Cold War: Putin's Russia and the Threat to the West

In late 1999 when Vladimir Putin was named Prime Minister, Russia was a budding democracy. Multiple parties campaigned for seats in the Duma, the nation’s parliament. The media criticized the government freely. Eight years later as Putin completes his second term as president of Russia and announces his bid for prime minister, the country is under a repressive regime. Human rights abuses are widespread. The Kremlin is openly hostile to the West. Yet the United States and Europe have been slow to confront the new reality, in effect, helping Russia win what experts are now calling the New Cold War.

Edward Lucas, former Moscow Bureau Chief for The Economist, offers a harrowing portrait from inside Russia as well as a sobering political assessment of what the New Cold War will mean for the world. In this big, hard hitting and urgently needed book, he shows how

* Russia is pursuing global energy markets
* Neighboring nations are being coerced back into the former Soviet orbit
* Journalists and dissidents are being silenced
* Foreign investments and private enterprises are routinely defrauded
* Putin is laying the groundwork for controlling industry and planning his new role as prime minister

Drawing on new and hitherto reported material, The New Cold War brilliantly anticipates what is in store for the new Russia and what the world should be doing.

The Commanders
The Commanders

It is impossible to examine any part of the war on terrorism in the twenty-first century without seeing the hand of Dick Cheney, Colin Powell or one of their loyalists. The Commanders, an account of the use of the military in the first Bush administration, is in many respects their story -- the intimate account of the tensions, disagreements and debates on the road to war.

Open Question: Sri Lanka and Israel, behind the assasination of the late Mr Rajiv Gandhi ?
Although Indians have forgotten the assasination of Mahatma Gandhi , None would have forgotten the night of 21st May 1991 when the erstwhile Prime Minister Mr Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a female suicide bomber Typically one blames the Tamil Tigers the LTTE for the attack, they were in no choice to that they too have to accept the blame. Lets look deeper into the assasination Sri Lankan government under President Premadasa was as anti-Rajiv Gandhi as the LTTE. Premadasa opposed the India-Sri Lanka Peace Accord of 1987 and the induction of Indian troops into Sri Lanka in 1987 from the very beginning. His presidential election campaign included a pledge to get the Indian troops out of Sri Lanka. His first foreign policy initiative as the newly elected president was to request India to withdraw its troops from Sri Lanka. When Rajiv Gandhi procrastinated, Premadasa did the unexpected and the unthinkable - he secretly supplied large quantities of arms to the Sri Lankan government's long-term enemy, the LTTE. Finally, the Indian troops were withdrawn in 1990 Sri Lankan government under President Premadasa had a motive to see that Rajiv Gandhi did not come to power again. Did the Sri Lankan government have the means (the ability) to assassinate Rajiv Gandhi in Tamil Nadu? Could the very assasination have means of ways to turn India against LTTE ? Firstly Indira Gandhi was PRO LTTE, getting Bangladesh freed, se was in the path to deal the Lankan issue as well, unfortunately she was asssinated by her Sikh Soldier, once Rajiv took office, his style was different but not against the LTTE, though the Indian Peace keeping forces made a hell of a nuisence by raping the Tamil women and etc... Rajiv concern was entirely peace Rajiv Gandhi opposing relations with Israel Yasser Arafat was close to the Nehru-Gandhi family ? and had personally warned Rajiv Gandhi of a plot to assassinate him during the 1991 election campaign. By 1987, India?s Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi convinced Sri Lankan President Junius Jayawardene to sign the Indo-Sri Lankan peace accord, which gave autonomy to the Tamil areas in the north and east of the island. An amnesty was declared, and 3,000 Indian troops were sent as peacekeepers. Then Indian troops started to confiscate Mossad arms. In 1987, the Hindustan Times reported that in the Sri Lankan city of Jaffna, the troops seized large quantities of arms with Israeli markings, meant for the Tamils. Israel panicked, since peace would put an end to their death market. The inner circle of the Indian RAW also became worried, since they were on the Mossad payroll. What would become of their paychecks? Worse, when Rajiv Gandhi drafted the peace accord, he demanded that all Israelis leave Sri Lanka, since everyone knew that Jews maintained the violence there. Therefore the Jews (and perhaps the inner RAW circle) started plotting to liquidate Rajiv Gandhi. The Jews also increased their arms to both the Tamils and their enemies (the Singhalese) against Ghandi?s 3,000 Indian troops. In 1989 Ranasinghe Premadasa became President of Sri Lanka Premadasa allowed Mossad to arm the enemy (the Tamils) in hopes that the Tamils would wipe out the JVP Buddhists, and also cause the Indian troops to leave Sri Lanka. Meanwhile the Jews committed a series of false flag murders, causing all sides to escalate into worse and worse atrocities. India?s Prime Minister Rajiv Ghandi responded by sending 97,000 additional troops. By the following year (1990) Jewish false flags massacres had reduced Sri Lanka to a quagmire for India. Under political pressure at home, Rajiv Gandhi withdrew the army, but used the Indian navy to completely shut down the Jewish arms trade in Sri Lanka. In November 1991, the Indian Navy seized an Israeli ship carrying large amounts of arms and ammunition from Singapore to the Tamils. The Jews could tolerate no more interference from Gandhi for shutting down the Israeli arms trade, Gandhi was assassinated on 21 May 1991, On 8 Aug 1984, Ghandi?s mother, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, condemned Sri Lankan President J.R.Jayewardene for bringing Mossad into Sri Lanka. Two months later, Sikh separatists gunned down Indira Gandhi, probably using intelligence furnished by Mossad. Five weeks before Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated, Yasser Arafat in Palestine warned him that a hit was planned. The bomb that killed Rajiv Gandhi was composed of RDX explosives thought to have been manufactured in Israel. The conspirators? trial was held in total secrecy, and court records have never been released. Open Question: why do people think that the USA supports israel?
What is beyond question is that, at least by 1977, the master-pet relationship between the CIA and Hajj Amin?s movement was firmly in place. In 1977, the US was holding high-level secret talks with Hajj Amin's PLO/Fatah that violated a 1975 agreement with Israel not to do that.[77a] In public, US president Jimmy Carter worked very hard to give PLO/Fatah the dignity of a government in exile. The explicit point of Jimmy Carter?s diplomacy was to give international legitimacy to the demand for a PLO state in the West Bank and Gaza, and it was in fact Jimmy Carter who first proposed such a state, with the PLO obediently following about a week later, though up to this point the PLO had loudly rejected the idea of a PLO state in the West Bank and Gaza.[79] In 1978, when Israel tried to defend itself from PLO terrorist attacks coming from the PLO bases in southern Lebanon, vigorous US pressure forced the Israelis to back down.[80] In 1981, against Israeli objections, Ronald Reagan pushed hard for a PLO state in the West Bank and Gaza.[81] In 1982-1983 the Reagan administration rushed into Lebanon to protect the PLO from being destroyed by the Israelis, after the Israelis invaded Lebanon once again to protect themselves from PLO attacks against Israeli civilians in the Galilee. The US exerted very strong pressure on the Israelis to back down, and then provided a military safe passage for the PLO so that they could make their new home in Tunis.[82] In 1985, certain Israeli politicians, following US wishes, tried hard to advance the political interests of the PLO. In the same year, some Italian politicians who, it has now been established, were part of a covert (pro-fascist) CIA effort in Europe, sacrificed their political careers for the sake of advancing the political image of the PLO against Israel. Meanwhile, Ronald Reagan denied the Holocaust. This was not Reagan?s senility: the entire administration was behind the effort.[83] In 1987-88, the PLO launched the First Intifada in the West Bank and Gaza (though the media pretended it was a ?spontaneous uprising?). The US cooperated closely with the effort to blame the First Intifada on supposed Israeli brutality, and to use the accusation as a reason to advance the project to create a PLO state in the West Bank and Gaza.[84] In 1989, with Dick Cheney leading the charge, the US began supporting a PLO state in the West Bank as supposedly the ?only solution? to the Arab-Israeli conflict.[85] In 1991, a critical year, George Bush Sr.?s administration literally forced the Israelis -- with threats -- to participate in what became the Oslo so-called ?peace? process, the purpose of which was to bring the PLO out from Tunis and into the Jewish state, where it would become the government over the Arab population living in the West Bank and Gaza, from which position the PLO has been indoctrinating these Arabs into Hajj Amin?s genocidal ideology, and murdering any Arabs who disagree, as Hajj Amin also used to do.[86] In 1994, the same year that Yasser Arafat was given a Nobel Peace Prize (!!), and which saw the debut of the Oslo ?peace? process by bringing the PLO into Israel, Bill Clinton's CIA was training the PLO. This, despite the fact that Arafat?s henchmen were explaining to the Western press, in English, in the same year of 1994, that they would use their CIA training to kill Jews and any Arabs who didn't like that, in accordance with Hajj Amin's ideology.[87] When Yasser Arafat died, the US enthusiastically endorsed his replacement Mahmoud Abbas (alias Abu Mazen), who, like Yasser Arafat, has always shared Hajj Amin?s ideology and therefore wishes to exterminate the Jewish people.[88] Very soon, the Israeli government, under US pressure, will finish cleansing the Jews out of the West Bank (it has already cleansed them out of Gaza), giving this territory to the antisemitic terrorists who are pledged to destroy the Jewish people. From this position, and backed by Iran, by the Arab states, and by the US (and Europe), it should not be too difficult to mount the next genocide of the Jewish people, assuming that Israeli Jews and the Jews of the Diaspora continue to offer only a weak resistance to the treasonous policies of their own leaders. Resolved Question: What was Manchester United lacking during the 1970s and 1980s ?
especialy during the 80s when they were a very good outfit, and would often get off to some great starts in league campaigns but would end up under achieving and losing out to major silveware to Everton and L'pool ? In a nutshell, what was the underlying reason behind Liverpool being the dominant force in English football during those two decades and not Manchester United ? was it a psycholigical thing ? the expectations building up each year and the fact that they were 2nd best to Liverpool ? what was the turning point ? key players signed ? youth policy ? the stadium ? new management ? or all of those things ? I think it was 1991 , when Manchester United won the European Cup winners cup, i remember watching that game on tv and I must admit they were showing signs of becoming the next dominant force in the english game (and how right I was). Also seem to recall how in 1992 when Leeds took the title, Manchester United were by far the most exciting team to watch even if they JUST missed out on the title that year. so what was the problem during the 80s with United, and what was the fundamental reasons behind them failing to win league titles ? Resolved Question: Do Democrats need a HISTORY lesson? Democrats always caused bad economies, NOT Republicans. Agree?
The real reason why the economy is doing bad right now is because of DEMOCRATS, NOT Republicans. I'll walk the liberals through real history. In the 80s, under Ronald Reagan, the economy did great after SUFFERING under Jimmy Carter. Trickle down economics was PROVEN to work. When you give tax cuts to rich people, they will then decide to give raises to all their low level employees and they will also invest more and this will lead to more job openings. The only reason why there was a recession from 1991-1993 was because DEMOCRATS controlled Congress. The only reason why the economy was good during Clinton's presidency was because of REPUBLICANS. Ronald Reagan's trade initiatives took about 10 years to reach full effect, so the economy grew. Plus, the Internet was new and this lead to more businesses opening and REPUBLICANS controlled Congress and saved America from adulterer Clinton's communist policies. The economy was doing bad under George W. Bush, but this was because of 9/11. The economy rebounded under Republican leadership, but then DEMOCRATS got control of Congress and stifled Bush's efforts to help the economy. DEMOCRATS caused the housing crisis by FORCING banks to give mortgages to poor minorities that couldn't pay them back. The bad economy was caused by DEMOCRATS, NOT Republicans. Agree? Do Democrats learn a different history then we do? (more...)
