Resolved Question: What if analysis (spreadsheet) for earthquakes?
I am in a GIS (college) course and I am reading about Decision Support Systems. I am having trouble understanding the "What If" analysis since my mind does not think in "What ifs". (My world is based on either it is, or something is not.) Basically, I need to do a spreadsheet, which I can do no problem in Excel. What kind of inputs can I put into the spreadsheet besides, location of earthquake, magnitude, depth, duration? I would need to show HOW this spreadsheet is going to help someone make a decision on something related to earthquakes. What decisions would need to be made besides the obvious? I have never used a Decision Support System and I have never been a manager. I do NOT want to use sales as an example. I hate sales. I have never worked for a corporation that studied earthquakes, so I'm all confused and I just need to write my project proposal and have it done by Thursday Dec 11th. Oh, and the instructor wants use to have some kind of map as well so we can integrate this DSS into a GIS application. This is very confusing to me and this is my second to last class before graduation. Any suggestions from someone that works with DSS or if anyone can clear some of this up for me, that would be great! Thanks (more...)

I am planning a proposal for my girlfriend next summer and I have one in mind. I want you honest opinion of if you like it. I am planning to take her to a resturant at the beach and have a meal. When the waitress brings us the check I am also gona get the waitress to bring out a treasure map and hang it to my girlfriend. I am going to go out and put a small treasure chest with the ring in it before the meal and the treasure map will lead her straight to the chest. When she opens the chest I am going to ask her to marry me. What is your opinion on this proposal? Would you like it? (more...)

Resolved Question: who hates political correctness?
bah bah rainbow sheep - bah bah black sheep chalk board - black board mind map - brain storm bald - hair disadvantaged body odor - nondiscretionary fragrance retarded - mentally challenged janitor - environmental hygienist The Top Politically inCorrect Words and Phrases for 2005: 1. Misguided Criminals for Terrorist: The BBC attempts to strip away all emotion by using what it considers neutral descriptions when describing those who carried out the bombings in the London Tubes. The rub: the professed intent of these misguided criminals was to kill, without warning, as many innocents as possible (which is the common definition for the term, terrorist). 2. Intrinsic Aptitude (or lack thereof) was a suggestion by Lawrence Summers, the president of Harvard, on why women might be underrepresented in engineering and science. He was nearly fired for his speculation. 3. Thought Shower or Word Shower substituting for brainstorm so as not to offend those with brain disorders such as epilepsy. 4. Scum or "la racaille" for French citizens of Moslem and North African descent inhabiting the projects ringing French Cities. France's Interior Minister, Nicolas Sarkozy, used this label to describe the young rioters (and by extension all the inhabitants of the Cites). 5. Out of the Mainstream when used to describe the ideology of any political opponent: At one time slavery was in the mainstream, thinking the sun orbited the earth was in the mainstream, having your blood sucked out by leeches was in the mainstream. What's so great about being in the mainstream? 6. Deferred Success as a euphemism for the word fail. The Professional Association of Teachers in the UK considered a proposal to replace any notion of failure with deferred success in order to bolster students self-esteem. 7. Womyn for Women to distance the word from man. This in spite of the fact that the term man in the original Indo-European is gender neutral (as have been its successors for some 5,000 years). 8. C.E. for A.D.: Is the current year A.D. 2005 or 2005 C.E.? There is a movement to strip A.D. (Latin for Year of our Lord) from the year designation used in the West since the 5th century and replace it with the supposedly more neutral Common Era (though the zero reference year for the beginning of the Common Era remains the year of Christs birth). 9. "God Rest Ye Merry Persons" for "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen": A Christmas, eh, Holiday, carol with 500 years of history is not enough to sway the Anglican Church at Cardiff Cathedral (Wales) from changing the original lyrics. 10. Banning the word Mate: the Department of Parliamentary Services in Canberra issued a general warning to its security staff banning the use of the word 'mate' in any dealings they might have with both members of the Parliament and the public. What next? banning Down Under so as not to offend those living in the Up Over. Holiday Bonus: Happy Holidays or Season's Greetings for Christmas (which in some UK schools now label Wintervale. (In the word X-Mas, the Greek letter 'Chi' represented by the Roman X actually stands for the first two letters of the name Christ.) WHY ????? not answers discussion points please :) (more...)

Voting Question: What do you think of my education reform proposal?
Washington loves to talk about our broken education system, they pass bills like ?no child left behind?.They pass the bills, sign them into law and what happens a few weeks later? We find these very bills extremely underfunded and ironically ?left behind? by our very own ?representatives?. The truth about our education system is that it is simply broken, unfair, and unjust. As a wealthy super power, shouldn?t we also have an education system that enhances us,prepares our future generation for workforce competition and enables them and our country as a whole to have a brighter future. There are hundreds of thousands of children in this country that can not locate a single european country on the map. These kids are often forced to go to underfunded schools with an unqualified teaching staff that fail to undergo vigorous vetting to make sure that they wont fail our children and our country. But what the heck! How can we expect teachers to be functional when not even our congress dares to step up,take a stance and invest in our most necessary resource;education. We have to give incentives to people so that they choose to become educated;government needs to make sure that every school all around the united states, inner city or rural, has the tools necessary to provide a quality education to the future generations. We need reform now! I have a proposal. * Set up one federal bureau of education that will be responsible for asking for certain funding and outlining needs, structures and developments. * Set up 50 state education bureaus to tackle state educational issues.Such as rigorous surprise school inspections to make sure that every school/staff is up to excellent standards. * Make sure that every city that has a population of 200,000+ has two community colleges, two high schools, two elementary/junior high schools, and 1 main library. * Make internet access and the newest technology/textbooks mandatory in every public school in the country. Spend an approximate $13 billion to make sure that every school has computers, the internet, and textbooks for every single student. * Cover SAT prepping and testing costs for every public school student in the country to make sure that our students are competitive & able to get into the school of their choice. * Create at least 400 more vocational institutes state wide to give students the option to go to college or prepare to go into the workforce or learn a trade. * Promote sex education in high schools, teach them the consequences of teen pregnancy and where it leads them too.Teach them about their choices, their alternatives, and what they can accomplish. * Create the Autism Education Program(A.E.D.) to vigorously tackle the investigation of the causes and cures for autism and at the same time create free of charge educational institutions for these children and special parenting courses. Degree Incentive Program I want a program that will create an incentive for people in this country to pursue the goal of getting a college or vocational degree. The incentive would be in the form of tax rebates for those that can prove that they are alumni of a college or vocational institution. They would go in the following order. Associates Degree/Vocational Degree/Military Service(2+ years): $350 annual rebate for a 3 year period Bachelor?s Degree: $700 annual rebate for a 5 year period Master?s degree: $1200 annual rebate for a 7 year period Doctorate?s Degree + : $1700 annual rebate for a 9 year period. Property tax incentive: A reduction of 5% on all property taxes for a period of 7 years for all of the aforementioned. (more...)

Resolved Question: Can anyone help interpret a confusing dream?
So I don't know exactly how it started, but I am at a house party/get-together with my friends + other random people I don't know from my waking life. I remember the party being at my relative's house (in my waking life) but in the dream it is just a random house. It's during winter, there's snow and it's late at night, like two or three o clock am. Some people are inside and some are outside. Suddenly I decide that I absolutely have to get out of the house, so I do and that random guy follows me (he's my age approximately I guess in the early twenties) and follows me as I walk out in the backyard full of snow. Out of nowhere the guy proposes to me. I'm shocked, and decline. I try to get out by the fence but it is locked, and the guy is still following me (in the dream he is a friend I know that), urging me to accept his proposal. I decline again and go around the backyard to get out of there. He keeps insisting, and finally I tell him that marriage is not a priority in my life, that I'd rather have a successful career and prosperous life. (In my waking life, it is true I value prosperity and success and hard work more than anything, but I do want to get married some day!) I finally manage to get out of the backyard by climbing over the fence using the snow bank as help. I find myself on the boulevard in front of the house (which is exactly like in waking life in front of the relative's house). Suddenly the weather changes to a warm summer night (still at 3 o clock am). People from the party are still around by the way. I see the house of the man I have a huuuuge crush on (whos older than me) on the other side of the boulevard (again ,exactly like waking life), and I see him there too. So usually in my waking life I get hectic and nervous when I see him and it takes me about an eternity to decide to approach him (even though i know he might be attracted to me) Anyways in the dream I don't waste time and I walk to his house, call his name and he sees me. He waves and smiles and comes to see me. He starts telling me how beautiful I am and showers me with compliments and we start kissing. Happy ending. Second setting of the dream: I'm at another kind of get together, except that I don't know ANYONE who's there. I think they might be of a younger age, well teenagers, but I do not recognize one face. We're in a basement of an unknown house. I remember opening a door and seeing two teens sound asleep in a bed. Then out of nowhere a map of the world appears before me and I start locating the different countries. It ends there. (more...)

Resolved Question: Should Brazil Be Chopped Up for International Football?
I know that there are currently 5 - 10 nations that could give Brazil a run for their money (on a good day) but looking at the map http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Brazilian_states_by_population and thinking also of the way the Brazilians have dominated the FIFA World Rankings in 90% of the last 20 years; and if you add up all results from the last 3, 5 or 10 World Cups (or Confederations Cups) they are WAY ahead of all others, and they have more professional players at home and more professional players playing abroad than any other three countries put together, and splitting them up is not intended to harm nor help them, just to increase the number of superb teams and superb players with World Cup experience. So I ask, for the World Cup, their league and more importantly ALSO for the South American Nations Cup, which would be given an exciting qualification process like all other continents have, should we do with the Brazilian national team the same as was done (in different circumstances) with the Soviet Union & Yugoslavia and make it so that each state has its own country-level team in men's international football (and players are only allowed to play for the state they have lived in the longest)? Again, this is not to punish them and force an Argentino-European dominance, and if there were two such superpowers of the game I would strongly propose that the same happen to the other country too. It would increase the number of teams trying to qualify, remove some of the mismatches, give Brazil the chance both to have more than 20 players earning caps and to have more than one team in the final 8, and end the prayers that every country currently has that they hope they do not get Brazil in the round of 16 or the QFs. If there wasn't three Brazilian top scorers in every league in the world, it wouldn't be such a strong proposal, but at present I argue this would make the tournaments more exciting and open to many more possible winners. Resolved Question: Do you know about the inhuman and unhygienic conditions at Willacy detention center , Raymondville, Texas?
This disgusting concentration camp is a blot on the landscape, a blight upon the reputation of decent Americans and a monument to its instigator, George Wa*ker Bush. If more decent people in the USA knew how this place was run they would be protesting outside it with banners. From the "Washington Post" RAYMONDVILLE, Tex. -- Ringed by barbed wire, a futuristic tent city rises from the Rio Grande Valley in the remote southern tip of Texas, the largest camp in a federal detention system rapidly gearing up to keep pace with Washington's increasing demand for stronger enforcement of immigration laws. About 2,000 illegal immigrants, part of a record 26,500 held across the United States by federal authorities, will call the 10 giant tents home for weeks, months and perhaps years before they are removed from the United States and sent back to their home countries. About 2,000 illegal immigrants are being held in this detention facility in South Texas, awaiting deportation to their home countries. Some may wait months or years. (By Kirsten Luce For The Washington Post) The Immigration Debate The Washington Post's coverage of the immigration issue, from the politics of revising the nation's immigration laws to the impact of illegal immigration on the U.S.-Mexico border and the Washington region. » Bills: Side-by-side comparison » Key Facts: Reform Proposals » Map: A Widespread Issue » Special Report: Full Coverage Life Along 'La Linea' The U.S.-Mexico border is at the forefront of a growing debate over U.S. immigration and border security reform. DiggGoogle del.icio.usYahoo! RedditFacebook The $65 million tent city, built hastily last summer between a federal prison and a county jail, marks both the success and the limits of the government's new policy of holding captured non-Mexicans until they are sent home. Previously, most such detainees were released into the United States before hearings, and a majority simply disappeared. The new policy has led to a dramatic decline in border crossings by non-Mexicans, according to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. But civil liberties and immigration law groups allege that out of sight, the system is bursting at the seams. In the Texas facility, they say, illegal immigrants are confined 23 hours a day in windowless tents made of a Kevlar-like material, often with insufficient food, clothing, medical care and access to telephones. Many are transferred from the East Coast, 1,500 miles from relatives and lawyers, virtually cutting off access to counsel. "I call it 'Ritmo' -- like Gitmo, but it's in Raymondville," said Jodi Goodwin, an immigration lawyer from nearby Harlingen. An inspector general's report last month on a sampling of five U.S. immigration detention facilities found inhumane and unsafe conditions, including inadequate health care, the presence of vermin, limited access to clean underwear and undercooked poultry. Although ICE standards require that immigrants have access to phones and pro bono law offices, investigators found phones missing, not working or connected to non-working numbers. With roughly 1.6 million illegal immigrants in some stage of immigration proceedings, ICE holds more inmates a night than Clarion hotels have guests, operates nearly as many vehicles as Greyhound has buses and flies more people each day than do many small U.S. airlines. Gary Mead, assistant director of ICE detention and removal operations, said the agency is proud of its record, calling Raymondville "a modern, clean facility" that meets federal standards -- "which we believe are among the highest you'll find anywhere." Mead added: "We think the conditions of confinement there are both humane and consistent with all the rights they should be entitled to." Despite its spartan conditions, the facility in Willacy County, 260 miles south of Austin, is a key to President Bush's drive to create a channel for temporary foreign workers and a path toward legalization for as many as 12 million illegal immigrants living in the United States. To do so, the government must convince skeptics that it can credibly enforce laws aimed at illegal immigrants and their employers, and can hold and deport those caught by the U.S. Border Patrol. At the same time, the administration and its allies argue that even additional detention beds will be overwhelmed without new channels for legal immigration. Accordingly, the United States has embarked on a huge prison building and contracting campaign, increasing the number of illegal immigrants detained from 19,718 a day in 2005 to about 26,500 now, and a projected 32,000 this summer.
