Movie on Psychology and Emotion in Education: Snap Out of It! Emotional Balance DVD (1951)

This vintage film seeks to offer emotional reassurance to troubled youths, but fails to do so in strange ways. Howard is a C-student who wants to make As desperately. However, when he falls short of his goals he ends up in trouble. His teacher sends him to see the principal, who gives Howard a helpful lecture. Amazingly, Mr. Edmunds counsels Howard that he shouldnt have such high expectations for himself, but that he should keep himself emotionally balanced. Without the dangerously high expectation, he can focus on attacking the problem. There is a great scene where other kids are shown doing some activity that they hope to excel in, double-exposed so that they have the fantasy double of themselves right next to them, for example, one girl is singing next to a grand piano with a double exposure of herself next to her dressed in fancy costume, singing. But the overall message of the film is to temper expectations in order to not get swept away by possible failures a questionable message that likely wouldnt be permitted today.

Open Question: Shouldn't schools teach more Vocational Technical classes and skip the sex education?
I mean 10 minutes walking through a country fair will convince you that even the most stupid among us have figured out how to reproduce...it's getting a job, paying their bills and taking care of their family that seems to be beyond their limited grasp.
Pinky: Oh yes...can't forget to bring up Palin. Hey how about Obama's Momma who got knocked up by a married man or does this political bashing only go one way?

Open Question: How to encourage my sister to do a better job of raising her son?
My sister has a five-year old son. When he was a toddler, we read him stories and played with him. Back then he watched a moderate amount of television, mostly educational programming. He was a very gifted child, raised bilingual and very inquisitive.
Now, at the age of five, he watches television non-stop. My sister and her family (husband and two teenage daughters) are often very busy and don't have time to dedicate to him. He never has playdates and does not participate in any afterschool activities. I am very frustrated with my sister about this, but she insists that she can't deal with any more obligations to drive people around. Instead, they put the boy in front of the television to entertain him. It's engrained in my sister's household. While I abstain from watching TV except for ocassionally the news (I prefer reading), everyone in her house is watching TV whenever they have free time. A typical American household. Ever since her son's television watching has increased, I've noticed some negative behavioral changes. He is louder, impatient, uses bad words, impolite and adverse to any activity conductive to learning. He used to love to listen to stories, and now he runs away whenever I pull out a book for him. I'm trying to teach him how to read, but he is being extremely difficult. During commercial breaks and other times away from the TV he is very rowdy and troublesome, so my sister just puts him in front of the TV again. It's a cycle that just feeds off itself.
This boy was very bright as a kid, but all the traces of that have been lost ever since he started watching an excessive amount of television. He gets home at 3 and watches TV until 10, with only commercial breaks. He hates educational shows on PBS and occasional watches kid-appropriate shows on Nick, but mostly he watches the shows on Cartoon Network, which are inappropriate for five-year olds and not conductive to learning.
I want to turn it around and put him on the right path. My sister's other daughter had a similar upbringing as her brother, and today, as a teenager, she continues to watch television obessively, fails to complete her educational obligations and has some serious behavioral issues. I don't want this same future for my nephew. Can someone please tell me how to encourage my sister and the rest of her household to do a better job of raising her son so that these problems don't worsen and continue in the future?

Open Question: Should I retire at age 61 and 37 years of work?
I've been teaching art for 37 years and I'm 61 years old. I can't decide if I want to retire. There are good and bad things about teaching, some things I like, some things I don't. I'm making a decent salary finally, and as teachers we have great hours and many vacation days. I'm weary of some of the things teachers have to put up with like discipline, bad attitudes, lots of paperwork, and disrespectful students. However, I really like the kids who are nice and want to learn (too few of them). I guess my greatest fear is the unknown if I do retire now. I don't have family where I live, no grandchildren or such. I'd like to pursue a career in artistic painting, but that's a long shot in many ways. My fear is that I won't have enough to do, or won't feel wanted or needed. I could see how I might get depressed not seeing other people like I do at work. Another factor is that my partner is younger than me and has to work. So it will all change how we live, and I guess that kind of scares me. How does a person know when it's time to quit one job and move on to something else? I'll take a pay cut, but I feel I can make it on retirement and social security. When is enough, enough? I'd like to do some volunteer work or maybe get a part-time job. In many ways, I'm tired of what I've done for 37 years, and yet, I don't mind going to work. I like goig to work. Does any one have any suggestions?

Open Question: Why is teaching a profession so looked down upon?
You don't ever hear about firemen, nurses, policemen, doctors...being looked down upon. But bring up the teaching profession...and there is ALWAYS someone to say that teachers are paid enough...or too much...don't even work...have it easy....and so on. You don't ever hear people complaining when those other professions are asking for more money, more hours, and so on?
I wonder if it's because everybody has had more contact with teachers than any other professional (for example-I only see nurses when I'm sick, and have yet had to deal with a fireman or a policeman!). Everyone has went to school and had to deal with...what...possibly 7 teachers a year depending on if their school switched classes. Times that 7 teachers for every year they went to elementary school, middle school, high school and possibly college...
Maybe people had a bad teacher that ruined it for them. Maybe they didn't do well in school and blame the education (teacher) system. Maybe they are uneducated or undereducated- hence the ignorance. It sure doesn't help when the people going through education only see the teachers in the day...and during a school year...so the times they don't see them it appears as if they have free play time (nights, weekends and summers) such as they do.
But do you notice that all of the people bashing teachers are not teachers. Hence, they never walked in the shoes so how could they know everything that the job entailed?
Sure, there are some teachers that s#ck. Just like there are some dirty cops...some doctors that make fatal mistakes....greedy lawyers....but still, why are we looked down upon by so many?
Someone in this forum had said something along the lines as...."...don't try to give me this 'you teach the children of tomorrow...our future...get off your god complex'..." (not exact words).....but let me ask this: DON'T we teach the children of tomorrow? Aren't children, as they grow into adults...going to be responsible for our future? Don't we want to instill in them a proper education and morals?
What did I say that wasn't true? That was a lie? That isn't happening? It's not a "God complex" but the simple truth of what is going on. And still we're looked down upon by many.

Open Question: Stuck in My Current Situation? ?
I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place in this situation. I'm 25 years old and I graduated from college about 1.5 ago. I just started working not too long ago. I live with my parents. The situation is iffy. My mom understands I do not have many living options, so she doesn't want to make me leave. Yet, at the same time, the situation is tense. My mom tends to pry into my personal life and space. She's even read my mail in the past. Despite many conversations asking her to respect my privacy, she does not do so.
I only make about $25,000 a year. I'm fresh out of school and I'm a teacher. I do have plans to get a master's degree, so I can get a better paying position. I plan on becoming a special education teacher or something that will increase my pay scale.
Rent is very high in my area. The area I grew up in, is very upper middle class. The only "affordable" rent option would be to move to the closet city. But, it's not a nice city. It's the city where I teach and it's very run-down, very high crime and not very safe for a young 25 year old women alone.
I could probably move about an hour away. There is a more affordable, working class town that has decent rent (still high though). However, I would have to get a roommate. I could not afford it otherwise.
All my friends are either in renting situation or they are living with their boyfriends/husbands/fiances. I would prefer NOT to live with a stranger or someone who I have not known for at least a year. I had a bad experience with a roommate in college and I would prefer not to have a similar experience.
I do have a boyfriend. We've dated for 5 years. I've talked to him about moving in together. But, he says, "yeah, but these things do not happen overnight." He just doesn't seem ready.
So, I'm stuck. Living at home is tense. All my friends are living with their boyfriends. My boyfriend doesn't seem interested in getting a place. Again, I'm not keen on finding a random person. I would prefer not to have the experience I had in the past.
Getting a better job isn't possible. Since I have a teaching degree, there isn't much I can do outside of that. I will not finish my master's for at least 2 years. I've looked in tutoring, but that doesn't pay much.
I'm really stuck, but I truly do not know what to do. I have no options for roommates and rent is way too high to do on my own.
