Open Question: Just received a proposed audit in NY state?
I'm finally going through my mail after traveling/the holidays and I found this notice saying I never filed a state tax return in 2003 and owe over $400 but I most definitely filed. I see a few other people on here got a similar notice but unfortunately, I cannot find ANY copies from that year's return. A horrible excuse, but I was in grad school at the time and mailed it in at the 11th hour, so I just didn't take the time to keep track of my records. Is there anything I can do? Apparently the statement has info on my income from my federal return, and I made below 26K, so how is it possible that I owe anything in the first place? (more...)

Voting Question: I just got a statement of proposed audit changes. Help!?
whoa, the state of new york just sent me two letters today saying i owe an additional amount for 2003 and 2004. they are also attaching a bunch of late fees and penalties. I can't believe how much they are claiming I owe. I always claim 1 on my w-4 forms, and typically get a return. I also live in the city of New York. Typically I always get a return (i've had accountants, and I use turbo tax as of late). I don't understand how this could have happened. I'm freaking out. Any help I can get is greatly appreciated. It looks like on the form they are saying I never submitted which isn't the case. I've submitted every year of my life. I believe I got returns every year. (more...)

Resolved Question: Accounting, can some one help?
Accounting, can some one help? BTN 17-1 Refer to Krispy Kreme?s financial statements in Appendix A to answer the following: 1. Using 2001 as the base year, compute trend percents for 2001, 2002, and 2003 for revenues, operating expenses (cost of sales), general and administrative expenses, income taxes, and net income. (Round to the nearest whole percent.) 2. Compute common-size percents for 2003 and 2002 for the following categories of assets: (a) total current assets, (b) property and equipment, net, (c) intangible assets, and (d) accrued expenses. (Round to the nearest tenth of a percent.) 3. Comment on any significant changes across the years for the income statement trends computed in part 1 and the balance sheet percents computed in part 2. Larson?Wild?Chiappetta: Fundamental Accounting Principles, Seventeenth Edition Back Matter Appendix A: Financial Statement Information © The McGraw?Hill Companies, 2004 A A-1 Appendix Financial Statement Information This appendix includes financial information for (1) Krispy Kreme, (2) Tastykake, and (3) Harley-Davidson. This information is taken from their annual reports. An annual report is a summary of a company?s financial results for the year along with its current financial condition and future plans. This report is directed to external users of financial information, but it also affects the actions and decisions of internal users. A company uses an annual report to showcase itself and its products. Many annual reports include attractive photos, diagrams, and illustrations related to the company. The primary objective of annual reports, however, is the financial section, which communicates much information about a company, with most data drawn from the accounting information system. The layout of an annual report?s financial section is fairly established and typically includes the following: Letter to Shareholders Financial History and Highlights Management Discussion and Analysis Management?s Report Report of Independent Accountants (Auditor?s Report) Financial Statements Notes to Financial Statements List of Directors and Officers This appendix provides the financial statements for Krispy Kreme (plus selected notes), Tastykake, and Harley-Davidson. The appendix is organized as follows: Krispy Kreme A-2 through A-17 Tastykake A-18 through A-24 Harley-Davidson A-25 through A-30 Many assignments at the end of each chapter refer to information in this appendix. We encourage readers to spend time with these assignments; they are especially useful in showing the relevance and diversity of financial accounting and reporting. Special note: The SEC maintains the EDGAR (Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval) database at www.SEC.gov. The Form 10-K is the annual report form for most companies. It provides electronically accessible information. The Form 10-KSB is the annual report form filed by ?small businesses.? It requires slightly less information than the Form 10-K. One of these forms must be filed within 90 days after the company?s fiscal year-end. (Forms 10-K405, 10-KT, 10-KT405, and 10-KSB405 are slight variations of the usual form due to certain regulations or rules.) Resolved Question: Audit: FBI agents billed $45k apiece for Iraq OT. Your thoughts?
WASHINGTON ? FBI agents on temporary assignment in Iraq billed an average of $45,000 in overtime and extra pay for eating, watching movies and going to cocktail parties in some cases, the Justice Department reported Thursday. The audit by Justice Department Inspector General Glenn A. Fine concluded the FBI improperly used overtime and other premium pay allowances for employees sent to war zones. Between 2003 and 2007, the FBI spent $63 million in overtime and extra pay for employees in Iraq, the report found. Of that, $7.8 million was improperly billed. "Several FBI employees noted that they periodically spent time during the work day washing clothes," the report noted. "Questioned whether he should have been paid for the time spent in this activity, one employee defended the practice, saying 'when you're in that environment, anything you do to survive is work for the FBI.'" Other agents defended being paid to go to a regular Saturday night cocktail party, calling it an important "liaison" meeting. "We found that, on the whole, few if any employees worked exactly 16 hours a day, every day, for 90 days straight, within the meaning of the term 'work' as it is used in applicable regulations and policies," the report concluded. Link: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081218/ap_on_go_ot/fbi_overtime;_ylt=AuTEYltiZWqKrrARUk3YyJjZn414 Edit: Gross misappropriation of tax payers money and government funds. Why am I not surprised? $45,000.00 in over time per FBI agent. Add this to America's laundry list of economic woes. What's really sad is that the FBI agents had the nerve to justify it all? Un-freakin-believable. ( o _ 0 ) My Gunny Sgt in the Marine Corps would say to me "Doc. Over time is authorized." In the military, we don't get OT. We stay as long as it takes to get the job done. It's called "dedication." That's because it's "our job." The FBI aren't military and are authorized OT. Unfortunately they abused it period. Companies like Goldman Sachs are belly aching about their company going under, but they're doling the bailout money to their employees in the form of bonuses. ( o _ 0 ) Same thing with American International Group (AIG) Taking lavish vacations, spending money like it grows on trees, yet all the while crying about their company going under. The tail end of 2008 is the year of corruption and misappropriation of tax payers money. (more...)

So now that the big guys are in a sticky, companies are going under what about us little people that lost it all? The big companies I believe helped influence the changes in bankruptcy laws.I wonder what they knew or who they bought off.I have friends that did not over borrow and were simply victims of loss of jobs, myself included. What is in our future in all this? Then there is IRS that is squeezing small business.I found mine being audited back to 2003.Now I had to pay for this audit (my bookkeeper) an additional $1500 only to find they disallowed certain items. They spent way over the $700 I had to pay them. Again there is no information as to what happens to us little guys.Anyones thoughts? Thank you (more...)

Voting Question: what do you think of this email i received?
Here, in September, 2008, we are being told that our economy is in a meltdown, the stock market is reeling, politicians are finger-pointing (what's new?), and we're being asked to support a "bailout" program that will eventually burden the American taxpayer with over a TRILLION dollars in additional debt, or face a financial armageddon. There is plenty of blame to go around, but the following has to be regarded as an example of one of the worst abuses of power in the financial world, ever. It's a short read, but it speaks volumes about how power corrupts when no one cares enough to expose it, and demand that it be corrected. If you're wondering how we got into this mess, you need to read this. Three Men who brought down Wall Street Kevin Bennett Here is a quick look into three former Fannie Mae executives who have brought down Wall Street. Be sure to read the 'where they are now' at the end!! 1. Franklin Raines headed the Office of Management and Budget in the Clinton administration, before he became Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Fannie Mae. Raines was forced to retire from his position with Fannie Mae in 2006 when auditing discovered severe irregulaties in Fannie Mae's accounting activities. At the time of his departure The Wall Street Journal noted, Raines, who long defended the company's accounting despite mounting evidence that it wasn't proper, issued a statement late Tuesday conceding that 'mistakes were made' and saying he would assume responsibility as he had earlier promised. News reports indicate the company was under growing pressure from regulators to shake up its management in the wake of findings that the company's books ran afoul of generally accepted accounting principles for four years.' Fannie Mae had to reduce its surplus by $9 billion. Raines left with a 'golden parachute valued at $240 Million in benefits. The Government filed suit against Raines when the depth of the accounting scandal became clear. Read more here: http://housingdoom.com/2006/12/18/fannie-charges/>http://housingdoom.com/2006/12/18/fannie-charges/ The Government noted, 'The 101 charges reveal how the individuals improperly manipulated earnings to maximize their bonuses, while knowingly neglecting accounting systems and internal controls, misapplying over twenty accounting principles and misleading the regulator and the public. The Notice explains how they submitted six years of misleading and inaccurate accounting statements and inaccurate capital reports that enabled them to grow Fannie Mae in an unsafe and unsound manner.' These charges were made in 2006. The Court ordered Raines to return $50 Million Dollars he received in bonuses based on the miss-stated Fannie Mae profits. 2.Tim Howard - Howard was a 22-year veteran of Fannie Mae when he became Chief Financial Officer in 1990 and was named Vice Chairman in 2003. Howard was considered 'a stable pattern of earnings' at Fannie. In everyday English - he was cooking the books. The Government Investigation determined that, 'Chief Financial Officer, Tim Howard, failed to provide adequate oversight to key control and reporting functions within Fannie Mae,' On June 16, 2006, Rep. Richard Baker, R-La., asked the Justice Department to investigate his allegations that two former Fannie Mae executives lied to Congress in October 2004 when they denied manipulating the mortgage-finance giant's income statement to achieve management pay bonuses. Investigations by federal regulators and the company's board of directors since concluded that management did manipulate 1998 earnings to trigger bonuses. Raines and Howard resigned under pressure in late 2004. Howard's Golden Parachute was estimated at $20 Million! 3. Jim Johnson - Executive Assistant to Walter Mondale, 1977-81 CEO of Fannie Mae, 1991-98. A former executive at Lehman Brothers and who was later forced from his position as Fannie Mae CEO. A look at the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight's May 2006 report on mismanagement and corruption inside Fannie Mae, and you'll see some interesting things about Johnson. http://www.ofheo.gov/media/pdf/FNMSPECIALEXAM.PDF Investigators found that Fannie Mae had hidden a substantial amount of Johnson's 1998 compensation from the public, reporting that it was between $6 million and $7million when in fact it was $21 million.' Johnson is currently under investigation for taking illegal loans from Countrywide while serving as CEO of Fannie Mae. Johnson's Golden Parachute was estimated at $28 Million. WHERE ARE THEY NOW? 1. FRANKLIN RAINES? Raines works for the Obama Campaign as Chief Economic Advisor. 2. TIM HOWARD? Howard is also a Chief Economic Advisor to Obama. 3. JIM JOHNSON? Johnson was hired as a Senior Obama Finance Advisor and was selected to run Obama's Vice Presidential Search Committee. Observation: IF OBAMA PLANS ON C (more...)
