Roy Orbison: Black & White Night [Blu-ray]
Roy Orbison: Black & White Night [Blu-ray] Few early rockers were more gifted or less honored in their prime than the late Roy Orbison, whose vaulting tenor and vulnerable love songs conjured heartbreak and desire with operatic intensity. This 1987 concert special, originally broadcast on Showtime, came two decades after Orbison had retreated from pop's front lines, yet neither Orbison nor his music coasts on mere nostalgia: in every respect, A Black and White Night survives as a triumphant performance and a superb video production, as well as a first-rate retrospective of Orbison's hits.

Filmed in black and white against the streamlined art deco stage of the since-demolished Coconut Grove in downtown Los Angeles, the concert is buoyed by a remarkable cast of A-list Orbison fans who signed on as his accompanists. Under the direction of producer T-Bone Burnett, the stage band thus includes Jackson Browne, Burnett, Elvis Costello, k.d. lang, Bonnie Raitt, J.D. Souther, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, and Jennifer Warnes, along with the rhythm section from Elvis Presley's fabled late '60s and early '70s touring band. That astonishing lineup is all the more noteworthy for the restraint with which they collaborate--it's evident that those superstars came to honor Orbison, not upstage him, resulting in a gratifying cohesion to the performances.

Orbison himself sounds as powerful as ever, his soaring falsetto cresting as dramatically as it did on the studio versions of the hits that inevitably dominate. Those songs meanwhile confirm that his blue chip admiration society came as much for the caliber of his writing as for his ravishing voice: if he remains best known for the jaunty come-on of "Pretty Woman," Orbison was first and foremost a rock balladeer, capable of bringing lumps to our throats with such classics as "Crying" and "Only the Lonely," or conjuring romantic trances through such gentle charmers as "Dream Baby." On this night, he handled all of them with fervor and finesse. --Sam Sutherland

Open Question: Does this seem like a possibility to you?
I'm bored so I thought I'd get something off my chest, even if it is only half of my total argument/theory. For years before the first UFC, and especially thanks to legends like Bruce Lee, it seems to me that specific Chinese Martial Arts (Kung Fu one of the biggest) were often boasted as the ultimate hand to hand combat system. Tons of times do I remember hearing about certain Chinese MA and Kung Fu heroes described as unstoppable even compared by today's MMA and MA standards. So what I'm getting at is, doesn't it seem like the mysticism behind Kung Fu and other Chinese MA's today has been shown (maybe even proven) to be not as top of the line and other worldly as it once was compared to the MMA of today with its heavy emphasis on Kickboxing and Jujitsu? How come there really hasn't been one living legend since Bruce Lee who has been proven to possess a form of Wing Chun or Kung Fu or whatever that can destroy the other fighting and sparring legends that goes by more than word of mouth?! Why this comes together for me is because not once have I read about or seen any mixed martial arts (any form goes) league with a strict practicioner of Kung Fu, Wing Chung, tai chi, ect. that can come up and whoop a league of fighters revolving on the normal MMA forms. You could easily just say that they don't want to go into events like this because they are largely outside of China and maybe they aren't into all-out hard-sparring events, but then can any of them continue to claim that their Chinese/Asian (possibly ancient) form of MA is overall superior to any current MMA form or combo of forms? Can anyone put up more than words to back up what I'm saying is wrong or ignorant, or is the current forms of MMA possibly superior to the mystical Asian forms of MA we've been hearing about since we were young?.... Open Question: About Robert Rauschenberg...?
I know he was a artist from the 60s on, and he used JFK in numerous art works, and the shuttle, and MLK, and other things. In my art class I have to recreate an artwork by him or do something similiar to his style. I was thinking I could put a whole bunch of current events from today on a canvas type thing (Cut them out from magazines, print them, etc) and paste them in an interesting way like a collage and use splatters of paint all over the art work. Is this a good idea? (more...)

Resolved Question: [Urgent!!!] proof read scholarship essay due tomorrow!! plz help me!!!!!!! best answer 10 points!!?
Essay the consumes 1. extracurricular activities 2. educational or professional goals 3. Jobs you have held 4. Community or school service 5. Your leadership roles in school 6. Special home or family situations My goals and life plans have always inspired me to do my best. From increasing my academic?s grades to experiencing and learning new things, I continue to push myself further so that I can always grow as a person. In high school, my primary goals included getting into college. Now that graduation is on the horizon, my professional goal is to design clothing. I remember watching a fashion runway show on television for a full three hours. I was so inspired by the beautifully crafted fashions, that I grabbed a pad of paper and started sketching on the spot! It was at that very moment that I realized my passion for crafting fashions, and even though I could not fully express it at the time, I knew that my destiny was to become a successful clothing designer. During my junior year, I participated in a career preparation program at the non-profit Center for Arts Education. As a participant, I had the opportunity to intern at Bloomingdale?s in the Window Display department. As an intern, I gain experience displaying the spring lines of a variety of designers such as Ralph Lauren, Elie Tahari, Gucci and others. In addition, I worked with Bloomingdale?s window display?s costume designer for the renounced annual Christmas window event. My favorite part of my internship was apprenticing with a costume designer while he created an amazing coutier gown. I was honored to have him trust my design sensibility in allowing me to provide the accessories to complete his design. I was humbled by the immense time and effort that went into creating windows design or designing the holiday windows. In the Spring, I volunteered to be a teacher in the " Puerta de Paz" Evangelist Christian Church. I am currently teaching young children the word of God once every two weeks. This community service has taught me to take leadership and responsibility towards the lessons to be taught and to control the children. I have also volunteer for the health fair in my school this December. I was in charge of the health food section, serving abundance of students healthy beverages and foods. It was my responsibility to show them how to replace certain meals to benefit your body and health. After school, I participate in the Art, Photography and Christian club. I have experienced many exciting events and have learn many captivating information during each club I have participated in. My mother is currently unemployed and now we are depended on Unemployment Benefit. We are also have been depended on the support of welfare and food stamps. My parents are divorced and my father does not support the family financially. For college, I am fully depended on financial aid, scholarships and loans because my mother has no method to pay the cost for college. My long term goals and dreams have been my motivation since I can remember . I have been pushing myself and working my hardest to learn the art of making beautiful clothing for women who not only want to look beautiful but feel beautiful as well. That to me is important as a Fashion Designer, to have that ability like no other career out there. However, I know that it takes knowledge and experience from a successful fashion industry to realize my dream. That is why this scholarship is very important to me, it is not only the help I financially need but it will be the start of what I know in my heart I was meant to do. (more...)

Open Question: what can I do to make my life more interesting?
Hi. I'm 13. I live in Maryland. I hate it here. My life is so boring. There are all these things that I want to do, but I can't because my family doesn't want to. Some of these things are: Travel to Australia, Africa, Asia; Attend more cultural events in nearby DC; See more theatre performances; Go to museums and art galleries more often I know that I'm advanced for my age. My family is just soooo boring. They don't want to do anything but stay home all weekend and I hate it. I know I'm too young to move out, but honestly, if I was 5 years older and living on my own, I'd be doing all of these things and more. What can I do to make my life more interesting. I also hate living in a suburb, but my dad says that we have to live here and we can't move because I go to like a #1 school in the country. I want to move really badly to New York or California, and I'd even consider Massachusetts, Oregon, or Washington State. I tell my parents that I'd like to do these things and they say either Do them with friends (which is impossible because two 13/14 year olds can't go to another country together, go to DC together, go to a theatre performance together, or museums or galleries together, because there would have to be some parent involvement and my parents want to have nothing to do with it) or Do them when you're older (which, I will, but I want so badly to do them now). I hate my life. I hate my school. I have very few friends and no friends at school, and my age limits me from doing all these things I want to do. My parents tell me that these are the best times of my life and I just don't realise it, but I am 100% sure that this is one of the worst times of my life. They say "Wait until you have to go out into the work world" and I am looking forward to doing that, actually. I am doing everything I can to make sure that I have to spend as little time in this area as possible. I figured it out that I can live here for 2 more years if I study abroad in 11th grade, and skip 12th by doing summer courses in English and Math the summer after 11th. I plan on going to live in Europe for what was supposed to be my 12th grade year and then going to a good college and studying French, German, and Russian. Then, I plan on becoming a translator/interpreter and living in Europe or maybe Canada or a more interesting place in the US. I don't like my family that much, because they are boring. The only interesting person in my family is my grandma, and she is so cool. She is a multi-millionaire. She lives in New York City. She has so many college degrees. She travels to Europe all the time and even owns a café in New York. Oh, and she used to live in France and speaks fluent French, she went to China for about a month, and she's been to every continent, too. I beg my parents to let me move to New York and live with her, but my dad says that NY City schools are bad, and I'm like "Hello, private!" but, he wants me to stay here. I just want to turn 16, so then, I can start going to New York and other places on a regular basis (not so I'll be able to drive, because cars are bad for the environment. So I can take trains to New York without my parents and because I'll be allowed on planes alone then). Oh, yeah, and I hate my school because our subjects are so boring, except French. English-Okay, I speak the language fluently and I use relatively good grammar. Math-I have thought it over many times and translators don't need math. Yes, everyone needs basic math, but I'm taking algebra courses here, which you don't need. Science-I really don't care about all this. Leave it to Scientists. It confuses me so much. History-I should love History and I actually do, but not what I'm being taught. I loved it in the last two years, I did geography and studied the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Europe, Russia, Canada, South America, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. However, now I am spending the year studying American history which is a very short history and it doesn't make sense that I got 2 quarters of European history (which is over 4000 years long), but I spend 1 year studying American history, which is about 400 years long. Reading-It's the same as English. I don't know why I have 2 separate classes, one called Reading and one called English. Well, anyways, I can read and I do read travel guide books, art books, theatre books, and language books a lot. So, there you have it. I'm dissatisfied with my life and I want to know what I can do to make it more interesting, because it's just going really crappy right now. I'm not Christian. I never have been, have never had the desire to become on, and I never will. Religion is not the issue here. I'm Jewish, by the way. (more...)

Open Question: Help with a novel called The Bathhouse?
My class has done extensive discussions and work with this novel by Farnoosh Moshiri, but I need some ideas for my project. I'm making a piece of artwork that reflects the themes of this and I'd like to get a more solid grasp of such themes. My ideas so far are... - bloodshed - indicating society's intrinsic tendency to turn on each other, the inevitability of conflict, how bloodshed from killing others is as natural as blood shed in menstruation - passage of time - a device used to indicate the narrator's disconnection from reality in the bathhouse - some reference to the moon showing the Face of the Almighty Most of these are just motifs or devices and I need a stronger understanding of the actual themes. Help with that! And also Can anyone direct me to some artwork relating to or depicting the Iranian Revolution? Since the novel deals with a Iran in the early 1980s during Ayatollah Khomeini's Shiite Revolution and I feel the need to be inspired by some artwork, whether they are paintings or sketches or photographs, from that time and event. I'd like to see what kind of art was used and what was a common theme or subject. Any supplemental historical information that you have available would also be very appreciated! Thank you very muchhh!! (more...)
