Open Question: I know this is long, but can you read some of this and tell me if it's good so far? It's LD debate AFF case.?
Affirmative (The resolution isn't very good for morality.) and keep in mind this is my first LD case that I have written. ?The world court, human rights, international law, and crimes against humanity are all new terms that are part of global efforts to bring a universalist, equal, and common moral justice to all peoples? (that is from the NationMaster.com online encyclopedia). I stand in firm affirmation of the resolution; resolved, that the United States should submit to the jurisdiction of an international court designed to prosecute crimes against humanity. I would first like to define the major terms regarding this debate: Jurisdiction will be defined as it is in Merriam-Webster?s Dictionary of Law, which is ?the power, right, or authority to interpret, apply, and declare the law.? And crimes against humanity are defined by the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court Explanatory Memorandum as they, ?are particularly odious offences in that they constitute a serious attack on human dignity or grave humiliation or a degradation of one or more human beings. ...murder, extermination, torture, rape, political, racial, or religious persecution and other inhumane acts reach the threshold of crimes against humanity only if they are part of a widespread or systematic practice.? In this debate I will be valuing justice, defined in Plato?s Republic as ?to every man his dues.? My first contention is that submitting to a international court system would be a positive step for the United States to take. The national court that is around today is the International Criminal Court, or ICC, in which 108 countries have joined in about 7 years. Sub-point A is that international sovereignty is not hurt if we submit to this court. The ICC is not where all crimes against humanity cases immediately go to. As the website for the court states, they only enter in as a last resort matter; they do not act if, ?a case is investigated or prosecuted by a national judicial system unless the national proceedings are not genuine.? This means that unless formal proceedings were used to shied a person from criminal responsibility, the ICC does not enter in on the matter. This shows that it is used to stop any fraudulency in cases and will in turn increase the legitimacy of cases because such fraudulent behavior will decrease. Also, the resolution states that it will only submit to prosecutions against humanity, the ICC is designed for that purpose as well as for genocide and war crimes. But any other court following similar guidelines followed by the ICC but only prosecutes crimes against humanity would be a feasibly option. And due to the definition I provided for crimes against humanity, the court will be able to suppress large outbreaks of murder, rape, and the various crimes I mentioned before. The second contention that I would like to present is that joining such a court would increase global morality. If the United States joined forces with multiple countries for an international court, we would be coming together for the greater good of the world. A slightly smaller-scale example would be Hurricane Katrina: when Louisiana had that devastating disaster, the other states did not sit back and watch, they helped by sending food, clothing, and money to the wrecked citizens. Now the we need to help prevent crimes against humanity not only in our country, but in others. The more countries that join in such a court, the more powerful it could become, while all of the countries sticking together to make sure the court stays at a reasonable level as to no become excessively powerful. My Sub-point B is that the court will promote equal protection of rights. Robert Grimsley (Emeritus Professor at the University of Bristol), in his book Jean-Jacques Rousseau, pg. 101, states, ?No individual will be required to submit to conditions which are not also applicable to everyone else. Justice demands that all the members of the community enjoy equal rights.? The court brings justice to the global community, in that all who are tried have equal rights that are applicable to all. The more countries that join, the further global justice can be strengthened. Foreign relations would, in turn, improve with the various countries working together. My third sub-point is that joining the court would support Jean-Jacques Rousseau?s Social Contract. Rousseau believed that people collectively band together in order to increase liberty. This is exactly what submitting to an international court will do: it promote liberty by halting fraud and crimes against humanity. Resolved Question: Marriage versus Holy Matrimony, an interesting case of definition?
Long, but bear with me, each point is an important one. Whilst poking about on CNN.com for information on gay marriage - as if we aren't all fed up to our eyeballs of hearing about the issue - I came across the most interesting comment someone left on one of the pages: "According to Merriam-Webster, the word "marriage" was first used in the English language in the 14th century describing a legal contract. Holy Matrimony is the ecclesiastical term used well before that. So let civil contracts be 'marriage' and church ceremonies be 'holy matrimony.' That fits their respective definitions anyway." Intrigued, I loaded up ye olde Merriam-Webster.com and poked around. Their definition of marriage is: Main Entry: mar·riage \?mer-ij, ?ma-rij\ Function: noun Etymology: Middle English mariage, from Anglo-French, from marier to marry Date: 14th century 1 a (1): the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law (2): the state of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage b: the mutual relation of married persons : wedlock c: the institution whereby individuals are joined in a marriage 2: an act of marrying or the rite by which the married status is effected ; especially : the wedding ceremony and attendant festivities or formalities 3: an intimate or close union Funny. I don't see religion mentioned anywhere. Hrm. So, back to my point, shall we? Let's not make this an issue of "Civil Union vs. Marriage", further isolating the LGBT community as somehow being an aberration, as opposed to, as the preamble of our constitution states, "that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness". Why don't we make this a "Marriage vs. Holy Matrimony" issue? Marriage being the legal union between two legally eligible consenting adults, recognized by state, local and federal governments, while Holy Matrimony be kept for those who wish for religious recognition of their marriage vows? Marriage maintains the legal requirements by law, and Holy Matrimony maintains the religious integrity of each faith's individual beliefs in the matter. Everybody wins! Resolved Question: People who send Christmas cards but had no time for you all year?
Don't you hate getting a Christmas card from someone who couldn't make any time to do things or even call you at all during the whole year? * It is like a little reminder that you are "on the back burner". I don't send cards or gifts to people who have been out of touch the other 364 days of the year. People have time for those who are important to them. My family is going to have a personal Christian Christmas filled with those who DO care about us. We have fresh juice and french toast, open presents, go to church, take a scenic drive together, eat dinner, watch sports and movies. * It is not that my friends are very busy or overworked. I live in a small town and the women don't have office jobs or children at home. We all have plenty of time. I refer to people who refuse invitations and don't even return phone calls. Resolved Question: Christianity is a "way of life"?
Hi Christians. =) I have a question for you guys... I've been seeing this for quite some time here on R&S by now, and also in other places. So I just want to know what you mean when you say stuff such as this: "I don't know why, I'm a Christian and I don't consider Christianity to be a religion, but rather a way of life..." (Quote taken from a recent answer by a Christian R&Ser.) What exactly do you mean when you say that Christianity is a "way of life"? Or when you say that it is all about having a "relationship with Jesus"? Please explain this to me... Isn't Christianity, by its very definition, a religion?! I don't think it is possible to get away from that as a fact... You have a god, a holy book, rules and dogmas you follow, a belief in the supernatural, a belief in an afterlife, etc... Merriam-Webster defines religion as follows: "1 a: the state of a religious b (1): the service and worship of God or the supernatural (2): commitment or devotion to religious faith or observance 2: personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs and practices 3 archaic : scrupulous conformity : conscientiousness 4: a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith." I most definitely think Christianity fits into this definition! If you disagree with me, please feel free to explain why that is... WHY would you say that you're not part of a religion, but that it is a "way of life" or a "personal relationship"? Is it because it sounds a bit more comfy? how do you define entertainment? here are some definitions from well known sources: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entertainment http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/Entertainment supposedly music and movies are a form of entertainment but the definition of entertainment seems kind of hollow compared to what movies and music means to me. they're more than mere amusement to me they're a source of inspiration, creativity, happiness and many other things.i can't think of a time where i watched a movie and didn't have any thoughts about it afterward or listen to music and not be moved, they both really fulfill me. it's sort of along the lines of people that buy season tickets to sport events or people that like to go to concerts often. it's more than enjoyment, it kind of defines them and their personality. i was wondering how people feel about music, movies and what your defition of entertainment is? also do you consider the definitions of entertainment listed above are a valid description of what movies and music are? If you're going to say that Abortion Clinic bombers are defending the weak and therefore justified, then bin Laden is going to say that US Foreign Policy and militarism have been killing innocents in foreign countries for decades and all Al Qaeda is doing is defending them from US imperialism.
