Ice Castles
Ice Castles Not half-bad, this lightly engaging, potboiler romance concerns an ice skater (Lynn-Holly Johnson) who loses her vision in an accident but goes on to excel on the ice with the support of the guy (Robby Benson) who loves her. When she takes up with some rich schmuck, however, intertwining problems in her work and in love throw a shadow over everything. Nice performances, nice skating--the whole thing is a pleasant distraction. --Tom Keogh

Radio
Radio Since winning an Academy Award for his exuberant performance in Jerry Maguire, Cuba Gooding Jr. has gotten little but static from critics for a spate of calamitous career choices not seen since '80s-vintage Burt Reynolds. But he triumphantly returns to Oscar-worthy status with his moving performance as Radio, a mentally challenged young man, whom South Carolina high school football coach Harold Jones (Ed Harris) takes under his nurturing wing. This does not play well with the school's patient but questioning principal (Alfre Woodard); the school's biggest athletic booster, who views Radio as a distraction; the man's son, the team's star player, who plays cruel pranks on the trusting Radio; and the Coach's teenage daughter, who feels neglected. Almost all will be won over by Radio's trusting and good nature. Based on a Sports Illustrated story, Radio was adapted for the screen by Mike Rich, screenwriter of The Rookie, and as in that superior family film, the heroics are mostly off the field. As Coach says, with all the subtlety of a blitz, "We're not the ones been teaching Radio; he's the one been teaching us." The ending, in which we see the actual Radio, still cheering his team on 26 years later, will melt the most cynical hearts. --Donald Liebenson

The Ringer
The Ringer Johnny Knoxville (Jackass, A Dirty Shame) stars as a man who pretends to be mentally challenged so he can fix the Special Olympics. This morally dubious premise (the movie goes to great lengths to be sure you understand how appalling it is) is not as inflammatory as it could be--The Ringer is careful not to mock its mentally challenged characters. This is sometimes a source of strength, as some of the funniest jokes come from the perspective of the athletes--for example, a group of the other athletes recognize that Steve (Knoxville) is not the high-functioning mentally disabled guy he pretends to be, but they go along with the masquerade and even help Steve because they can't stand the snotty reigning champion. But this respectfulness also makes the movie feel cautious and inhibited (one imagines there's a wealth of un-PC jokes that got cut out of the script so it could pass muster with the Special Olympics, who gave the movie its blessing). As a result, the movie's real plot turns out to be a love story, as Steve falls for one of the Special Olympics volunteers (Katherine Heigl, Romy and Michelle: In the Beginning) and has to find sneaky ways to undermine her slimy boyfriend. All in all, an uneven comedy with occasional flashes of wicked wit. Also featuring the always welcome Brian Cox (Adaptation, X-Men 2). --Bret Fetzer

Part I introduces foundational topics in adapted physical education and sport, including program organization and management, adapted sport, individualized programs, and instructional strategies. It helps teachers and leaders to plan, assess, prescribe, teach, and evaluate adapted physical education. Part II explores the unique physical education needs of students with various disabilities.

Part III examines developmental considerations, including motor development, perceptual motor development, and considerations for infants and toddlers as well as for early childhood. In part IV the focus is on physical activities and sports for people with disabilities. It includes chapters on rhythmic movement and dance, aquatics, team sports, individual and adventure sports, and enhancing wheelchair sport performance. Each chapter identifies skills, lead-up activities, modifications, and variations to make the experience meaningful, motivating, and fun for the participants.

Fitness Programming and Physical Disability (book)
Fitness Programming and Physical Disability (book)

The definitive handbook for developing accessible fitness programs

No single book offers more information for developing and conducting exercise programs for groups that include people with physical disabilities. In Fitness Programming and Physical Disability, a dozen authorities in exercise science and adapted exercise programming explain how to effectively and safely modify existing programs for individuals with physical disabilities--without changing the quality or nature of the activity.

Fitness Programming and Physical Disability is an important reference for health fitness instructors, rehabilitation specialists, and fitness directors who design and lead group exercise programs. The book is also used as the text for Disabled Sports USA's "Fitness Is For EveryoneSM" Adaptive Fitness Instructor Certification Workshops.

The book is organized in four parts that guide the reader from theory into practice. Part I, an introduction, describes several common physical disabilities, provides insights to help exercise leaders better understand and communicate with people with disabilities, and draws attention to potential barriers that may limit access to community programs.

Part II explores the effects of physical disabilities on exercise and training, with particular emphasis on how physically disabling conditions may alter the structure and function of the physiological systems that interact to support aerobic and anaero

Voting Question: I feel empty inside....?
My life looks pretty good on the outside. I am in med school, and doing well. I am well on my way to being a doctor. But despite all this, I am absolutely miserable. I feel like I do not fit in in school. I stick out like a sore thumb. Eveyone else seems to get along with each other so much better than I do. Indeed, many of them went to the same undergrad schools. I did not. I feel like all I've made are acquaintances. No real friends. Not the kind of people who'd put you first if you needed a friend, and who you could talk to about anything. When I hang out with my classmates, I feel like an outsider. Their lives have been so different than mine. They've partied, travelled, played sports and have dated. Meanwhile, I have always been an unpopular kid, and have a really bad limp due to a disability. No cane or anything. But the limp is there for everyone to see. I just don't have anything in common with them. There is a girl in class who I like. She seems different than the rest. But she also never wants to do anything. She never even wants to hang out as friends. I've been tying to date for awhile. I've never had any success. I think that finding an emotional and physical relationship with someone is what I am missing in my life. I see othe people having relationships and being absolutely happy. They have someone to talk to, and who wants to talk to them, and to whom they can be affectionate around. I've found that when I see this, it makes me feel angy, envious and frustated. As it is, I feel absolutely incomplete. I feel like a part of ME just isn't there. I've been feeling incredibly sad, and what's more, I keep on thinking negative thoughts about myself all the time. All these things keep feeding each other, as well. Any advice? (more...)

Resolved Question: What would be a good topic for a research investigation? Feedback really appreciated.?
Im going to be designing, analysing, and writing up a psychology report which has to be related to social perception, nervous system, attitudes or language and thought. im just looking around for some interesting ideas/inspiration. To get the ball rolling ill give examples of what i mean: "An investigation of perceived body aesthetics and its contribution to the empowerment of marketing strategies for sporting goods" "Effects of media formats on emotions and impulse buying intent" "Exposure to media and desensitisation to violence" "Attitude towards disability" "Media consumption and opinions on thinness of females" "Cognitive dissonance in smokers" "Reaction times in perceptual tasks" etc.... Resolved Question: Do you think there is too little coverage of disabled sport on television?

Resolved Question: Why men seldom give seats to elderly and disabilities on buses? What are they afraid of?Being polite is scary?
I saw that happens a lot here in Singapore. Last Sat I went on a bus and saw a young man in sport wear, yet he's sitting at a priority seat and a disabled with crutches aboarded the bus, yet he sat still like blind and deaf without minding to stand up to give that seat to her. What do you people think of this kind of manner and what make them so selfish even with a seat? Andrew P, that man wore shorts with muscles and can jumped of the bus at his destination. No artificial leg can be that perfect. I Emphasized that I SAW these cases a lot and not just this single case. Just admit the bad fact and stop stand up for the bad behavior. (more...)
