Writing Workshop: The Essential Guide

Is the writing workshop the only way to teach writing? No. There are a variety of approaches or programs, but none of them matches the writing workshop when it comes to growing strong writers. That's why, despite the pressures of testing, the writing workshop has endured and even flourished in thousands of schools across the country.
Today we face a time when as many as ten million new teachers are entering the profession. It is for these teachers, and others who are unfamiliar with writing workshop, that Ralph Fletcher and JoAnn Portalupi wrote this book - as a way to introduce and explain the writing workshop . . . to reveal what a potent tool the writing workshop can be for empowering young writers.
Above all Writing Workshop is a practical book, providing everything a teacher needs to get the writing workshop up and running. In clear language, Fletcher and Portalupi explain the simple principles that underlie the writing workshop and explore the major components that make it work. Each chapter addresses an essential element, then suggests five or six specific things a teacher can do to implement the idea under discussion. There's also a separate chapter entitled "What About Skills," which shows how to effectively teach skills in the context of writing. The book closes with practical forms in the appendixes to ensure that the workshop runs smoothly.
Fletcher and Portalupi's twenty-plus years working with teachers have convinced them that there is no better way to teach writing. This important book is the culmination of all their years of effort, a synthesis of their best thinking on the subject.

Open Question: Does anyone else hate it when people use pictures of their kids as their avatars in online forums? ?
It always weirds me out when I'm in a discussion with a picture of an infant. I've noticed lots of people do this.
Sorry about the extra question mark - cut and paste typo.

Open Question: Advice for taking Praxis II math (0061) this Saturday?
Help! I am taking the Praxis II math exam this Saturday, and I am very nervous. I figured the exam would be easy, and that I would just need to refresh a few things I have forgotten from high school. Now, after browsing online and reading various forums, I hear discussion that the exam is much harder than expected. I did the ETS sample questions, as well as a few other short, free practice tests I could find online. I heard a lot of people talk about http://www.praxisiimath.com/ and it seems to be the consensus that his practice tests are harder, but prepare you adequately. I wish that I had more time to study, but I only have 5 days, so my dilemma is to take the test on Saturday and hope for the best, or to try to purchase the sample tests from the website (which are $30) and try to do them quickly over the next week.
If it helps, I never studied for the SATs or took any courses/practice tests, and I got a 1390. I feel like I am very good at math, and I really think I should have no problem PASSING the exam. Granted, I now realize I probably won't receive the top score, but I only need a 137 to pass.
Advice? Has anyone already taken the Praxis II in Math? My problem is I really don't want to shell out the $30, especially only having 4 days to study (that is, if he responded to me quick enough).

Open Question: Buffy Season 8 Questions/Discussion?
I have always loved Buffy, and I will be honest, I have read/own *some* of the Buffy Season 8 comics, but not all of them! I generally have a good idea of what's going on, because I do keep up on each issue summary/forums...My questions are as follows? (BEWARE SPOILERS!)
...
...
...
1.) RILEY!! Now I am a 100% Bangel fan, BUT I was one of the *very* few people to have enjoyed Riley's character and relationship with Buffy on the show. I love Riley...honest, good, moral, GOOD, Riley! SO, what are you're opinions on his seemingly turn to the dark/Twilight side?
2.) Your guesses on the identity of Twilight? WHO is HE?
Any speculations?? The more detail, the better...I have my opinions and I will share some, but without reading every comic thus far I am sure that I may be a little off/missing something, and once I do get around to reading them completely I should have a lot better insight! Thanks!!

Resolved Question: Do you think Answers is a good discussion forum? ?
I think it's great for seeing what other people out there think, but it doesn't leave quite as much room for two-way discussion as one might hope. After all, the asker can only pick one "best answer" and give a short little blurb on why they chose it. Plus, they can't respond to other people's answers in a very in-depth way. Do you think there is a better format out there for something like Yahoo Answers?

Resolved Question: Do many girls really like stalkerish guys?
I dunno why a friend of mine is even talking to a guy who seems very stalkerish on facebook. He keeps on making sexual jokes and gives hints that he wants it with her. He then posts pics of himself with her pictures on his crotch. She just seems flattered. He keeps posting on her wall 24/7 too. Guess where she met him? Yeah in a forum discussion.
I don't understand why some girls like to be stalked. Is it the attention they seek?
I don't care what happens to her no more, it's annoying.
He comments on all of her pics and status.
I just want to ignore her until she comes for help, she plays with the stalker like she really would let him get into her legs.

Open Question: Anyone know good Christian forums anywhere?
Some that are just for Christian discussion only, and have good membership? Care to put them here if its allowed? That's if the atheists don't decide to take them and try to crash them too. I don't want to join a cliquey or cult type group, just somewhere to talk to other everyday Christians? What's the most popular
I guess if you did know a good site somewhere else what would you be doing here but maybe someone has something
Nah anyone is allowed to be here as long as they're not insulting or abusive but most of you are and it's getting a bit old

Resolved Question: Peyton Manning MVP well deserved? ?
Peyton Manning is a great QB, I agree whole heartily. The best player in the NFL this year? I suppose on a top 10 list sure. So anyways Manning is out. Last play sacked at the one yard line and now he is out.
I didn't hear Manning's name one time during MVP discussion in forums, ESPN blogs, or even sports analysts over view of the best player. Why is the MVP for football always so, how to put this, not the best choice?
Once again to all you colt fans I think Manning is great, but only having 9 Manning games in a 16 game season doesn't just sound like un MVP worthy, it sounds like a pretty bad season for Manning all together.
