Resolved Question: About Universal Healthcare That Some Democrats Want , How Would Limits On Doctors And Nurses Salaries Work?
Would limits on salaries cause health care workers to retire and go into other lines of work? Would limits cause fewer people to want to enter the medical field, which would mean hospitals would hire more below-standard foreign doctors? America spends over $2 trillion dollars on National Health Expenditures, and the only way for the U.S. to afford UHC would be to cut healthcare workers' salaries. http://www.cms.hhs.gov/NationalHealthExpendData/Downloads/proj2007.pdf Doctors in America make around $140,000 while doctors in England make $60,000. U.S. salaries GP salary $139,000 http://www.payscale.com/research/US/People_with_Doctor_of_Medicine_(MD)_Degrees/Salary United Kingdom GP salary $60,000 (40,000 Pounds) http://www.payscale.com/research/Uk/People_with_Jobs_as_Physicians_%2f_Doctors/Salary Canadian GP Salary $82,000 ($100,000 Canadian Dollars) http://www.payscale.com/research/ca/People_with_Jobs_as_Physicians_%2f_Doctors/Salary The census bureau says $45 million are uninsured. That number includes tens of millions of illegal immigrants. (Which why Southern states like Texas have the most number of uninsured) Correction: 45 million, not $45 million. Also, many people who can afford healthcare insurance do not buy it. "according to the same Census report, there are 8.3 million uninsured people who make between $50,000 and $74,999 per year and 8.74 million who make more than $75,000 a year. That?s roughly 17 million people who ought to be able to ?afford? health insurance because they make substantially more than the median household income of $46,326" http://www.businessandmediainstitute.org/articles/2007/20070718153509.aspx The United Kingdom predicts a shortage of doctors. "There will be a shortage of GPs and nurses in four years' time, but the NHS will have to shed hospital doctors, leaked government documents show."... "But it said by 2011 the health service will experience a shortage of 1,200 GPs, 14,000 nurses and 1,100 junior and staff-grade doctors by 2011. "... "There will also be 3,200 extra consultants that the *** NHS cannot afford to pay ***, as well as 16,000 other health professionals such as physios, health scientists and technicians. " "BBC NEWS Shortage of NHS staff predicted" http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/6228659.stm One of the primary purposes of the Federal Reserve is to act as the "lender of last resort". "Lender Of Last Resort" "classical theory of the lender of last resort, those rule stressed (1) protecting the aggregate money stock, not individual institutions, (2)letting insolvent institutions fail, (3) accommodating sound but temporarily illiquid institutions only, (4) charging penalty rates, (5) requiring good collateral, and (6) preannouncing these conditions in advance of crises so as to remove uncertainty" http://www.richmondfed.org/publications/research/economic_review/1989/er750202.cfm http://www.richmondfed.org/publications/research/economic_review/1989/pdf/er750202.pdf (more...)

Resolved Question: Would you vote for me? Why or why not?
I share views from both major parties. Officially I'm a Democrat, but I do not vote party-line. I have a mind of my own. WAR -I'm against the Iraq War. -30,000 troop surge in Afghanistan was the right thing to do. WELFARE -Recipients should be required to pass drug tests! -Increase public assistance to those who are in legitimate need -Don't give the homeless money...........Give them homes. I'M PRO-LIFE -Pro-Patriot Act -Pro-Gun control -Pro-stem cell reserach -Use death penalty less often. -Restrict & Ban abortions (especially partial-birth abortions) -Life begins at conception CIVIL RIGHTS -Let gays marry, "To each his own." -Civil Unions demonstrate "separate but equal" which is unconstitutional. -AGAINST Affirmative Action: Don't make hiring decisions based on whether they are minorities. TAX REFORM -Tax Churches and raise the standards for a service to be considered "non-profit" tax-exempt. -Replace irs with national sales tax -Use alternative revenue sources to replace taxes; higher fines on criminals & traffic violations -Gear tax cuts towards the middle class, I pretty much don't give a crap what the rich have to pay in taxes RESTRICT SMOKING -Raise sales tax on cigarrettes and using that money to fight cancer -Ban smoking in public places -Allow hospitals to have a policy where they don't hire smokers ECONOMY -Against social security: Let people manage their own money. SS should be voluntary to pay into. -Maintain a mixed economy; part capitalist part socialist -Enforce mandatory paid vacations like they do in Europe -My position on Universal Healthcare: We need to come up with a better way to pay for it. -Bush medicare bill was a mistake. -I believe the bailout was necessary. And look on the bright side; that bailout wasn't a gift; it was a loan. They owe us that money back. But we've already bailed them out once.....If they ask for another, the answer is NO. FREE TRADE -Allow it, it may lose facotry jobs but it gives us lower prices. And the most important jobs are not the labor-factory ones. (more...)

Voting Question: 1. Why was Starbucks so successful?
Starbucks Quality plus Social Conscious Sells Around the World Starbucks was started in 1971 by three academicians in Seattle. Ten years later, Howard Schultz joined the company. During his trip to Italy, he realized that the coffee house could be much more than that of a simple place where you drink coffee. However his idea was not accepted by the owner of the company being frustrated, Howard Schultz looked for investors and eventually bought the company. From 1987 until 1992, Starbucks remained a privately-held company. When the company ventured outside the Pacific Northwest, the company first experience disappointment which were followed by mix to moderate successes. Howard?s dream was to not only provide a friendly environment for the customers, but also for its employees provide friendly service. This meant taking good care of its employees by providing healthcare benefits not only for its full-time employees, but also for those working 20 hours or more. Moreover, employees could also purchase stocks in the company. In a nut-shell, company pay and benefits attracted motivated employees with good skills. Starbucks? aim was ?to build a company with soul?. This meant that employees had to listen carefully to what customers want and meet their expectations. The customeroriented philosophy was expressed in the mission statement which also emphasized that employees treating one another with dignity, enjoying diversity in the workplace, reflecting the local community, having high standards for coffee, being a good member of the community, and being, of course, profitable. The mission statement resulted in strategies that led not only to domestic but also international expansion. In 2006, the Starbucks website displayed its presence in 16 international countries including Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. The long-term goal was to have some 25000 stores in various locations. To achieve this long range aim, Starbucks designed stores with pleasant ambience which customers, surrounded by coffee aroma, have been really enjoying. Also, since 2002, the company worked with T-Mobile USA by providing internet access in the coffee shops. Besides offering caffeinated and decaffeinated beverages, a great variety of specialty coffees as well as teas are offered. Customers can also get juices, pastries, coffee mugs, coffee-making equipment and even CDs. Moreover, Starbucks partnered with PepsiCo and Dreyer?s Grand Ice Cream and engaged in licensing agreement with Kraft Foods. Coffee is also offered at warehouse club, Marriot Host international, United Airlines and even at Wells Fargo Bank. Catalog sales were tried but did not succeed and consequently were discontinued. Starbucks also invested unsuccessfully in a number of dot.com companies. The sense of social responsibilities guided the company?s actions. Not only did the firm participate in local charities to ?give back? to the community in which it operates, but also applied this sense of responsibility to its purchasing practices. Most of its retail stores and hotels with which the company had licensing agreements, used Fair Trade Certified coffee. Clearly, the company has been successful despite competition from coffee makers such as Proctor & Gamble, Nestle and Kraft General Foods. How, then, will Starbucks meet those and other challenges in the future? Questions 1. Why was Starbucks so successful? 2. How does Starbucks differ from other coffee houses? 3. How could the company attract non-coffee drinkers? 4. What other challenges may Starbucks encounter in the future? (more...)

Voting Question: What do Conservatives think of this 60s song?
Lennon/McCartney) You say you want a revolution Well you know We all want to change the world You tell me that it's evolution Well you know We all want to change the world But when you talk about destruction Don't you know you can count me out Don't you know it's gonna be alright Alright Alright You say you got a real solution Well you know We'd all love to see the plan You ask me for a contribution Well you know We're doing what we can But when you want money for people with minds that hate All I can tell you is brother you have to wait Don't you know it's gonna be alright Alright Alright You say you'll change the constitution Well you know We all want to change your head You tell me it's the institution Well you know You better free your mind instead But if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao You ain't going to make it with anyone anyhow Don't you know know it's gonna be alright Alright Alright ----- COMMENTARY: I thought John Lennon was a Liberal hippie. This song by today's standards is way "Conservative." It preaches that when Obama-supporters want to change the system and the Constitution and have universal healthcare and raise taxes on the rich? These people should change their minds instead, because America as it is will be alright without these Liberal changes. Another Beatles song that today is anti-Liberal was called "Taxman" which implies opposition to having an estate tax in "When you die, clear the pennies from your eyes." And the "If you drive too far I'll tax the street, if it gets too cold I'll tax the heat, if you drive your car I'll tax the seat, if you walk instead I'll tax your feet....TAX MAAAAN." Has the definition of Liberal changed? Because the Beatles song lyrics are quite Libertarian and yet we think they were hippies. (more...)

Voting Question: How did foreign car makers get to build all those plants in non union & poorest states of USA?
who engineered this scheme and why?? Did american workers who consist of the great majority of the citizens of the country make this choice.....cause they felt they made too much and had too many benefits like healthcare and a good pension? Why would the working people of a country approve of laws and policies that tend to reduced their standards of living? Are the citizens of any other countries in the world doing things like that too to their own selves?? (more...)

Resolved Question: To what extent are Australian values defined by the legacy of the Whitlam government?
From the enactment of equal opportunities to the first steps toward reconcilliation, to publicly provided healthcare and the social welfare net, everything I have read so far points to the Whitlam government setting the standards which remain with us even now. Do you think the Rudd government is capable of advancing social justice with the same force and effect? To what extent are Australian values defined by the legacy of the Whitlam government? Resolved Question: Have you had good or bad healthcare experiences? help needed for assignment?
I am working on an assignment in which I need to weigh up the standard of care delivered in NHS and private healthcare settings. Has anyone had any good/bad experiences they would share with me? Please keep them anonymised (no hospital names etc) but let me know whether its NHS or private you are writing about. I have tried to look online but each sector only has complimentary things to say about their services! Thanks, it would be a huge help! :D (more...)

Resolved Question: How does living in the UK compare to life in the U.S. ?
Lately I've been wondering how life in the United Kingdom compares to life in the United States. I've been contemplating what it would be like to move there, and I'm mostly curious about the experience as a whole, not just specifically healthcare, or standard of living, with one of the most prominent reasons for relocating; being that I'm looking for a less American experience XD. I think we've degenerated as a country, and I'd like to see how I prefer somewhere else. Any and all personal experiences are appreciated! Thanks! =D (more...)

Resolved Question: Whats healthcare like in the United States?
I recently saw that Michael Moore Film "Sicko".And was saddened and appalled by the accounts given by american people; of their experiences of the American health system. Ever since an american teacher called Mrs Irene Oastamen, came to my school when a kid, i have always found america fascinating.I went on to study american history when i was older, and it has always been my intention to emigrate there once i have completed my education. I know better than to believe everything that i see on tv, and i know for a fact that the health care system in britain, although good by global standards, is not as great as michael moore portrayed it to be. Statistically the French health care system for example, is much better- i think its ranked number one in the world. But since i am interested in going to live in america, the question i have for any american people is. How does the health care system work in america? Is it as bad as michael moore depicted it as being? (more...)

Resolved Question: Fair Labor Standards Act?
Why do I have a category FLSA (Fair Labor Standards Act) on my paystub, where I am getting PAID, and not have any deductions? I am making WAY above minimum wage, and this is in California as well. I have worked here for many years, in the same area of business (healthcare) and NEVER EVER had this category on my paycheck. Anyone has an answer to this? (more...)
