Resolved Question: I WANT TO AVOID A TICKET OR TOW IN D.C AND ALEXANDRIA?
I am moving from San Diego, working in D.C, and living in Alexandria. I am a full time on-line student in San Diego until June 2009. I also have a handicap parking permit that is valid until June 2009. So far the VA DMV says I don't have to change anything because I am a full time student, but I don't intend on telling them that I plan to stay at least until June. I know that I need to register my car with the city of Alexandria, but my main concern is whether or not I need a inspection sticker for when I park in DC or anywhere else (we don't have that in CA). Does anyone forsee any problems or are there any suggestions to avoid future headaches? (more...)

Voting Question: Should I buy this 1992 Ford Crown Victoria Convertible from Craigslist? ?
http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/953878032.html Quote Email sent to me from seller about car: OK, here is the best I can do: The Car is Automatic (All Crown Vic's are - Or at least come from the factory that way. If I wasn't selling it I would put a 5 speed in) The Car was my primary transportation for about 4 years, I drove back and forth from Greenville (about a 200 mile round trip) once or twice a week and it never let me down or left me stranded. I bought it from a guy in Charlotte because I just had to have a 'Cop Car', drove it back to Greenville, and noticed the car had no Oil pressure. LESSON ONE: Cop cars are surplused out becuase they are worn out. I swapped another police motor into the car, which lasted the next 4 years. LESSON TWO: Crown Vic's were designed to be fleet cars and are very easy to work on, if you have the right tools you can swap an engine out in an afternoon. Apparently I never learned lesson one or I woudn't have swaped in another police motor becuase after 4 years it blew a head gasket. I bought a $400 beat to crap Toyota pickup to go pick the third motor up with (which is the motor in the car now, a 2002 out of a Civlian Mercury Marque with 61K on it) and about that time the Gas started to get expensive and the Toyota got around 35 MPG so I basicly parked the Vic and drove the Toyota from there on. When I swaped the motor in I also replaced the radiator with a Heavy duty replacement (correct for the police package). The Current motor (the 2002 motor with 61K on it) runs great, better than either of the police motors that were in the car. I wouldn't hesatate to get in and take it on a 500 mile trip. Here is the bad news; The transmission shakes. The transmission has shaken since day one, I remember it shaking when I test drove it in Charlotte, I remember it shaking all the way back to Greenville. I attribute this to LESSON ONE (see above) although a transmission shop may be able to flush the fluid or adjust something to clear it up. I don't think it is on it's last leg because I drove it for 4 years with the same shake in it and it never got worse (although it never cleared up either). If you are a gear head you may already know the 92 Crown Vic came with an AOD-E transmission with Computer Controlled lock-up (AOD-E stands for Automatic OverDrive - Electronic). They only used this transmission for one year and then switched to a totally computer controlled transmission so you can't swap a later model Crown Vic transmission in it because the '92 computer won't control it. You might be able to swap an earlier transmission that requires no computer control (like a C4 or a C6) into it; or perhaps a 5 speed out of a mustang if you are really handy with fabrication. Or you can just leave it be like I did. Also the 2002 is the PI (Performance Improved) motor which has the factory ported heads and bigger cams in them, I think it is good for about 35 HP over the 92 spec engine. I love Crown Vics, they are the last American Rear Wheel Drive car that came with a V8 on a full frame. They are fast but don't feel like it cause of the suspension, they drink gas (I think this got 16 MPG no matter what) and you can hide 6 or 7 bodies in the trunk. There is nothing quite like it. I wacked the top off last summer so I could have a convertible and figured I would send it to the scrap yard after I had my fun with it. I just don't have the heart to do it. On a legal note, I got the car inspected the day before I cut the top off (june I think so it is good through june of '09). I don't know if it will pass inspection or not; there is no specific way to fail a car because of 'body work' but who knows? I usually go out in the country (like out to rural Knightdale or Wendell) to get 'questonable' cars inspected. Anyways, I have run way off track Yes, the car drives as is; nothing needs to be fixed on it. Shoot me an E-mail or give me a call; I take care of my father part time and don't have a conventional 9-5 job so I am pretty flexible as far as setting up a time to meet. Let me know what is good for you and I will make myself available (more...)

Resolved Question: Help! Bad Landlord? UK advice please!?
Me and my partner are renting a garden flat. We've been living here since 25th June this year although our paper work was all signed on 29th May, we were moving a long way and had to put rent down to cover June although we didn't actually move in until 25th. Anyway, after being here a few days we noticed our rather poorly built conservatory was leaking. I don't think it was originally a conservatory i believe it was a green house as it's got corrugated plastic roof. It was leaking down one beam on the inside of the roof and we had to put a pan down to catch the drips. We rang the Landlord loads and after a month he eventually sent a bloke out that was recommended to him. He turned out to be a cowboy and sprayed some of that 'No More Gaps' stuff in the corner of the room where he believed it was coming in. So we now have a great green blob in the corner of the room and it didn't even work. It hasn't stopped the water coming in it has merely allowed the water to travel down other beams and walls. So now we have to put several pans down. We also have a plug out there that doesn't have an on/off switch so is constantly on, the water runs down this wall and we have had to put blu tack along the wall to steer the water away from the plug. It is now December and our roof is still leaking. He came out last week (for the FIRST TIME since we moved in) with his financial advisor to look at the exterior of the property for some reason and didn't even mention our roof. He did how ever have a moan at us about water marks on the carpet out there and said it was from our 2dogs (who are both house trained) and not the roof and that it was going to be expensive to replace after we leave! I'd like to say now that the carpet out there is very old and had a rip in it before we moved in, this is all covered in our inspection papers before we moved in and we all signed it. Which is good but i'm still worried that he might take some of our deposit for the carpet even though it already needed replacing before we moved in. He's using the water marks as an excuse to keep our money to replace an already damaged carpet. We cannot help the watermarks - if we are at work and it rains no one is here to put the pans down. And we aren't moving out anyway. This morning we were looking through our Tenancy Agreement and in the 'Landlord agrees to...' bit it says he is responsible for the upkeep of the structure of the building. Which he hasn't done and it's now been over 6months. It also says that he keeps the deposit until we leave and doesn't say anything about it being protected. We've found out that from April 2007 all deposits are to be legally protected by government approved, registered protection schemes. We have lived in other rented property before and we were told our deposit was protected and was given a certificate number so if we were to dispute with our Landlord for keeping any deposit we did it through the protection scheme. But since moving here we haven't received anything telling us our deposit has been protected. So as that is now law does that make our Tenancy Agreement void because he hasn't done what he is meant to do with the upkeep of the building and has broke the law by not having our deposit protected? We tried to ring his financial advisor on the number he has given us but the line just goes dead. The Landlord also hasn't given us his personal address so how are we meant to write to him to report anything? If everything is done by phone there is no proof of what has been said. He has given us the address of his financial advisor but if the phone numbers a dud the address might be too. Any help much appreciated x Bog off charterman u useless waste of space. My question was for people who actually know what they are talking about. You obviously don't or you wouldn't be telling me to fix it. You wanna send me the money so it can be done? It's not up to me to fix a frigging roof it is upto the landlord dumbass. Anyone with atleast a brain cell knows that tenants aren't allowed to fix anything to do with the structure of the building as if it were done wrong i'd lose more than my deposit and will have another bill to put it right. Resolved Question: My Boyfriend went to school to be a mechanic and now wants to change his career?
My boyfriend went to vocational school and received his inspection license and started working right after he graduated in June he is still working at the same place and only makes $7.15 an hour! He will get no place with the job he is in because his brother worked here for 6 years and only makes $7.50 an hour!! So basicly I told him he should try to get another job but now he thinks he doesn't even like his career and I told him if he doesn't like his career he should do something else then. I think a job for him would be best as training at a vocational school or something like that what kinds of jobs could he get to make decent money. What kind of feild should he get into? He talked about being a probation officer but he hated High School and not sure if he would make it all those year in college. Anyone have any suggestions or links to some decent careers that don't require four years of college? (more...)

Resolved Question: Should and can I condemn my house?
My father died in June. I received a call from his best friend with the news, followed by, your dad's house was just set today, the final inspection is tomorrow, you will need to be there. That didn't suck enough. My dad's friend (best friend) owned a construction company and his son works for a rival modular home company from the one my dad contracted. They both loved my dad very much and came prepared to punch holes in the contruction. They pointed out that the shingles where put on wrong, the drywall was wavy, and that the roof flip brackets where nailed though using a gun, instead of using the manufacturer's preset holes and recommended nails, and the baseboard heater's where not centered and undersized for the space. I noticed that hurricane ties where not nailed on both sides and that the cabinets in the kitchen where crooked, and a dented front door. The builder has since stated that the roof is to expensive to fix, the flips are fine, and addressed the other issues. Since then, with some help from his friend, I have started work on completing the house. His friend is handling the estate for me, and has been helping. Lately his job has changed, and he can't be there that often. The house is a two hour drive for me, and actually I have'nt been able to actually meet up with him to help with the work for a couple of months. It's just been me trying to get this stuff done. Besides he does spend alot of time working with the lawyer and the estate bills and stuff. I am in no way complaining about what he has done, just pointing out that the burden of finishing has shifted more my way than I orginally expected. Since working on the house I have discovered that the wiring is a mess, 1/3 of the baseboard heat trips the breaker, they used 12-2 instead of 12-3 on 220 circuits, all the three switches I tested today return crazy mid range voltages indicating to me that there is voltage leaking between MANY of the lines, the smoke alarms haven't stop beeping and I sense that this connected with the problem with voltages I discovered today, their are numerous plumbing blunders I am discovering while running the pipes to the fixtures and have paid to fix these from my own pocket, the garage is not set to match the sill, so that doors don't line up and require a redo of all the door ways, they used single hung windows, and I everything I read in the paperwork for the house references double hung windows, they put holes in the garage for windows but say they are not supposed to supply those, and the house was suspisiously, partly sided. Me and the executor, although we are on the same page, I believe need more help. I can not fathom trusting this place with the wiring problems alone I discovered today. We had taken this to the state attorney general a month ago about the roof, and the builder told them that it was to expensive to fix, and they would warrant it. Problem with that is, with this kinda of product I don't expect them to be in business long. We where planning on taking them to a magistrate about the roof, but now I'm not sure what to do in light of the added problems. My question really is, should I pay for an extremely thorough inspection of this building and try and get it condemned? Can i get it condemned and what would be the repricussions of such an action? I feal with the wiring issues I discovered today that this place is truely a fire trap. Luckily I have had enough sense not to leave any power on when I am not there since I started this project. Resolved Question: issues with landlord?
I posted his question before and got some rude answers ill ask again and hopefully some smart people are on. First off let me say that in vermont you cannot sign away your renters rights, there is a set of uniform laws and rules all land lords have to follow. On sept 6th my land lord call and complains my apartment smells (i was away for the weekend) she asked if she could come in and I politely said no that I would be home monday morning (less than 48 hours away, which is the notice they HAVE to give in vermont. Unless of fire flood ect) She went in anyways forced us to get rid of some of our pets and is making us do weekly apartment inspections (which is harassment) Nothing has been fixed since june (the cable, a screen, bathroom fan, and part of a carpet need to be fixed) Now I have talked to an attourny (which i can't afford) and she has informed me that I am correct in thinking what they are doing is wrong. Now with that said how can I approach my landlord and let her know politely that what shes doing is wrong? I don't have a lease, its month to month, and am working on saving up money to move. But in the mean time i want the harassment to stop. This apartment is -NOT- being trashed, there has been NO damage done to it other than one spot where the carpet has been torn up by the cats, which we have agreed to replace because it is our fault. The screen and fan were pre-existing issues we were told were going to be fixed, and the cable issue is something that just cut out out of the blue. The whole reason our landlord is coming in every week is because of the supposed smell of cat litter coming from our apartment - something we have never smelled in the hallway, and none of our guests have complained about (including my parents, who are INCREDIBLY picky about these things). In vermont it is a law that there must be at least 48 hours' notice before they can enter the apartment, which was not given before they entered on the aforementioned weekend, and i should say cat litter is not a very suspicious smell, and certainly not grounds to enter an apartment without permission. Voting Question: How do I know if my house need a termite treatment?
My house has termite damage and it was eliminated when we bought it last June. We started a renovation project last week. One day my husband tore down the wall of the entrance, but he didn?t find any termites on that day. However, there are some small termites crawling at a corner beside the door the second day. Does it mean that termites come back? If we hire a commercial pest control company to do the inspection, will they be honest to really check whether or not we need a treatment? I am expecting now and due in early January. I am afraid that termite treatment will affect my unborn baby. (more...)

Resolved Question: Will Obama supporters over-look these facts?
I'm not against Obama being Muslim, but why won't he admit it? 2001: Beyond the visits to his Muslim relatives in Africa, Obama has little to say about Islam and Muslims until the events of 9/11. After that date, Obama begins to become more public in his support of Muslims and their cause. 2001: Obama is protective of civil rights for Muslims in the U.S., saying, ?In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging,? he laments. ?I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.? 2001: Obama sponsors Illinois Senate Bill 750 creating the ?Halal Food Act,? providing for inspections by the Department of Agriculture to ensure that all food labeled Halal is prepared according to Islamic law. Islamization ? here?s how it works and why Halal food plays a role. 2003: Obama calls the Iraq war ?a botched and ill-advised U.S. military incursion into a Muslim country.? 2006: In August, Obama took a taxpayer-funded trip to Africa. While he was in Somalia, he was photographed in full Muslim regalia. The photo appears in the February 4th, 2008 edition of ?The Examiner,? under the caption, ?Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is dressed in Muslim attire while on a trip to Kenya.? Gateway Pundit has uncovered what is probably the original posting of the photograph at Han-Geeska Afrika Onlline. [Geeska Afrika caption:] U.S. Senator Barack Obama, right, is dressed as a Somali Elder by Sheikh Mahmed Hassan, left, during his visit to Wajir, a rural area in northeastern Kenya, near the borders with Somalia and Ethiopia. The area is at the epicenter of a severe drought that has hit the Horn of Africa region, after erratic and insufficient rains during the April-June season. 2007: On February 27th, Barack Hussein Obama said the Muslim call to prayer is ?one of the prettiest sounds on Earth.? In an interview with Nicholas Kristof, published in The New York Times, Obama recited the Muslim call to prayer, the Adhan, ?with a first-class [Arabic] accent.? The opening lines of the Adhan (Azaan) is the Shahada: ?Allah is Supreme! Allah is Supreme! Allah is Supreme! Allah is Supreme! I witness that there is no god but Allah I witness that there is no god but Allah I witness that Muhammad is his prophet? ? According to Islamic scholars, reciting the Shahada, the Muslim declaration of faith, makes one a Muslim. This simple yet profound statement expresses a Muslim?s complete acceptance of, and total commitment to, the message of Islam. Obama knows this from his Quranic studies ? and he knows the New York Times will publish this fact and it will be seen throughout the Islamic world. Regardless of Obama?s religion, what message is he sending the world?s 1.2 billion Muslims? 2007: On April 8th, Obama shows his Muslim/Palestinian solidarity and sensitivity, by telling Muscatine, Illinois Democratic party activists that he supports relaxing restrictions on aid to the Palestinian people. He said they have suffered the most as a result of stalled peace efforts with Israel. ?Nobody is suffering more than the Palestinian people.? 2007: In an interview with the New York Times, published on April 30th, Maya Soetoro-Ng, Obama?s younger half sister, told the Times, ?My whole family was Muslim, and most of the people I knew were Muslim.
