Open Question: Career change from Receptionist - help needed!! (long question - sorry)?
I'm nearly 24 years old, I have 3 A-levels in English Language, Sociology and General Studies. Since 18 I have always worked as a Receptionist and my current position pays £16k which is great but there is literally nothing to do! The office is small and quiet and I have tried asking for work and tried to find work but ultimately I end up on the internet researching new careers! The only trouble is I just can't decide on what I want to do and stick with it. My dream job would be a Pilot but unfortunately I'm not clever enough. I love animals with a passion and have thought about trying to get into veterinary nursing or working at a zoo but from the research I have done and places I have contacted it seems nearly impossible! I am interested in beauty therapy so this is another option. I have debated going to University to completely retrain in something like nursing or something that interests me like psychology but I end up undecided and back to square one! I'm looking for some advice from anyone in a similar job to me who has made the change. If so, what course did you have to take or did you train on the job? Any advice in general would be great!!! I really want to make a change, I know it will involve a paycut and studying but I'm more than keen to do that! It's just so hard when I can't decide on a subject! xxx (more...)

Open Question: I want to work as Fashion Buyer but have no experience!!?
Hi all, I want to pursue a career in fashion! What I would like to be is a Fashion Buyer for Accessories. The only problem is I have no fashion background or any kind of degree or even A Level?s. I don?t particularly want to start a degree in fashion because I could start a job as a Buyer?s Administration Assistant and work my way up. I have considerable administration experience but not any retail. I will be sending out covering letters to some companies but what I do or say to make them want to hire me without really having a fashion background? Is there point in doing it?? I do have a passion for fashion and am currently setting up my own online accessories business but I would love to do it as a career also and becoming a buyers admin assistant would be the first step of getting my foot in the door. Does anyone have any tips or know of any organisations that can provide on the job training for this particular job? Thanks!! (more...)

Open Question: Can you guys help me with my project please?
Hi everyone, I'm working on the National History Day project and I need help. I am doing Harvey Milk on powerpoint and I only have 4 excluding the title screen and the bibliography and I need more (probably at least 4 more. The slides I already have are Who Was Harvey Milk? You?re probably wondering, ?Who was Harvey Milk??. Harvey Milk was a politician who was elected onto the San Francisco of Supervisors in 1977. Now you?re probably wondering, ?What?s so important about this man??, well I?ll tell you. Harvey Milk was the first openly gay politician in the United States. Harvey Milk helped give the gay community the rights that they have today. If it were not for Harvey Milk, then the gay community would possibly still be as widely discriminated the same way that they were in earlier years. What Was Happening to the Gay Community Before Harvey Milk Came Along? Before Harvey Milk was elected onto the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, horrible things were happening to the gay community. Before the police would often raid gay bars, arresting everyone they could. Openly gay men and women were unable to get descent jobs. At the time, everyone thought that the members of the gay community were all child molesters which was what school officials used as their alibi against hiring gay and lesbian staff. It was wide spread stereotype that gay men had AIDs and were effeminate while lesbians were said to be very masculine and feminists. Some of these stereotypes still exist today even though we are living in a different time. A Short Biography of Harvey Milk Harvey Milk was born in New York on May 22,1930. In 1947 he graduated from Bay Shore High School. He then went on to the University of Albany from 1947 to 1951 majoring in math. As soon as he graduated, he left for the Navy to serve in the Korean War. He was dishonorably discharged rapidly when they learned that he was gay. After being discharged, Milk returned to New York to become a stock analyst. Milk found himself disappointed with the stock market after a few years and so he decided to join theater production. A few years passed and Milk found himself bored once again and so he decided to leave New York. He travelled the United States until he ended up in San Francisco in the early 1970s. He opened a camera store in San Francisco?s Castro district, one of the largest gay communities in the United States. That was when he became a gay activist and helped Castro grow. In 1973, he decided to run for office. He got 16,700 votes and ended up in 10th place which was not bad for a man who had almost no experience with politics at the time. He kept running until he finally got a seat in the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. On November 27, 1978 approximately 11 months after he was elected he was assassinated by Dan White, a fellow supervisor who had resigned a few weeks ago and came back for his job only to find out that his position was once again taken. Outraged, White killed Mayor George Moscone and Harvey Milk and turned himself into the authorities. What Has Harvey Milk Accomplished During His Political Career? Although Harvey Milk had not accomplished many feats in the terms of quantity, the things that he did accomplish were all about quality and therefore changed the face of politics in the United States. First of all, Harvey Milk paved the road for other gay politicians. Milk also helped pass anti-discrimination laws in the state of California and encouraged many others in the country to stand up for their rights Feel free to make any suggestions or to input your opinions and please give me more to right. Thank you. @Nicky: No Wikipedia sorry but for some reason my my school and most likely the judges hate it when contestants use Wikipedia. (more...)

Open Question: I need help with this military UCMJ question!?
Can someone explain Article 93 of the UCMJ? I don't understand all that it entails: Any person subject to this chapter who is guilty of cruelty toward, or oppression or maltreatment of, any person subject to his orders shall be punished as a court-martial may direct Smitty Smith: Elements. (1) That a certain person was subject to the orders of the accused; and (2) That the accused was cruel toward, or oppressed, or maltreated that person. 1) Nature of victim. "Any person subject to his orders" means not only those persons under the direct or immediate command of the accused but extends to all persons, subject to the code or not, who by reason of some duty are required to obey the lawful orders of the accused, regardless whether the accused is in the direct chain of command over the person. (2) Nature of act. The cruelty, oppression, or maltreatment, although not necessarily physical, must be measured by an objective standard. Assault, improper punishment, and sexual harassment may constitute this offense. Sexual harassment includes influencing, offering to influence, or threatening the career, pay, or job of another person in exchange for sexual favors, and deliberate or repeated offensive comments or gestures of a sexual nature. The imposition of necessary or proper duties and the exaction of their performance does not constitute this offense even though the duties are arduous or hazardous or both. (more...)
