Open Question: Fallout 3... Elder scrolls V?
Hey, I haven't yet played fallout 3, but from reviews and videos of it... It looks like a futuristic edition to the elder scrolls series (oblivion) I've heard they were made by the same people or something like that, although am too lazy to check that out... Anyway, how close to morrowind for example is fallout 3? Because big world = Good... Big world without easy transport and very hard to navigate terrain along with a terrible map = Bad. Freedom of play and a completely not linear style of play = Good, but not being able to find out what the hell you're supposed to do = bad. So come on guys, quell some of my suspicions here, because I bought it and am awaiting delivery and wanna be put at ease. (more...)

Resolved Question: video game ideas??? (i'd like to possibly create a game after my main career) ?
i was thinking something based on stealth, with wide-open maps and a sandbox style, where you can do whatever you want , like change your clothing (ghilie suit, black tactical clothes, etc) , buy and upgrade weapons (silencers, scopes, grenade launchers, barrels, bipods, foregrips, etc), kill random people, can drive any vehicle on the game, etc. I was thinking that maybe the theme would be you would do tasks, like carry out assassinations, retrieve objects, blow stuff up (all buildings and objects are destructible), and more. You get money for the jobs, with which you can spend on anything that costs money. However, if you develop a big enough profile (leaving enough evidence around assassination scenes, or being caught out in the open), the police will begin to come after you when they see you, or will conduct searches for you. It's kind of like the Grand Theft Auto series, but with a stealthy, military-type theme. Another idea is that you can recruit people, and create your own sort of squad or whatever. You will assign these people to specific jobs, like a publicist or whatever they're called, and that will get you more jobs. Or you can hire them to come out with you into the field, and be your lookout or anything, and you can order them around. So I guess the game is a mix between... Grand Theft Auto, Hitman, Splinter Cell (because of the stealth theme of the game), and Just Cause (because of the huge map, with the sandbox theme). give me some more ideas, and tell me if you like the idea. i've got it all thought out. Resolved Question: Are video games based on films any good?
There´s a map of Notre Dame cathedral for the Unreal engine. I saw the game adaptation of "Jumper" for the Wii where one level was set in the Colosseum in Rome, but it was nothing like the real Colosseum. It would have been pretty straightforward to make it like the Colosseum, but they clearly didn't bother. I can't help but think this is more to do with development time than game play. Are video games based on films generally rubbish or can they be quite good? If they are good, is that to do with graphics, AI, gameplay, concept, or something else? (more...)

Resolved Question: Writing a sci-fi/fantasy series - is this part too much like a video game?
I've been writing a fantasy/sci-fi series for adults. I've written the rough drafts of two of the hopefully six books. This series concentrates mostly on character development and there is a strong focus on inner struggle. It deals with a variety of themes which I will not get into here. Before I get to my question please remember that I am not giving you a complete summary of my series. I will say only what I need to say to explain my question. I'm saying this because I have asked questions relating to my work on internet forums before and people seem to assume that everything I've written in my post is everything that is in the story. They'll say things like "you need to develop your story more" even though they haven't even heard 1% of the story. This doesn't mean I don't want constructive criticism. It just means I want the criticism to be about the specific aspect that I mention in my question. Anyway, Let's get to the question shall we? Basically, I'm worried that one aspect of the story (one that continues through the entire series) may seem more like a video game than a movie. In the story, one of the main characters is looking for powers. He gets these powers by touching engravings in walls that are found in shrines and caves. These powers can be combat related or something like the ability to see the future. I haven't yet explained exactly what these powers are. You could actually help me decide. I would rather not explain it with magic, since I haven't used that yet. I've always thought of it as alien "technology." The main character is able to find these powers becuase the first one he got (found unintentionally) included a sort of map to the others. The map is really just information and ideas for where the other powers are. There are about ten of these powers in the series, though he does not get all of them. So my problem is that this whole thing does sound like a video game. The series in general is not like a video game, but this particular aspect of the story does seem like one. This is a problem because the powers are a major part of the storyline, though not really the focus. So, that's all I have for now. I'd just like to hear what your opinions are about this issue. Please remember that this is not the "story" of the series. If I were to give you a summary it would look much different than this question. This is only one aspect of the plot. As always...10 points for best answer. Don't be afraid to give constructive criticism. And for now my excuse for the engravings to be scattered around in different, hidden places is that is was a religious thing that was done by the culture that made them. They believed the shrines were holy and should be hidden, and they wanted the powers to belong to their gods. Brooklyn: Please keep in mind that this is not everything. As I stated, it is not like a video game in general, where the plot consists only of going from one place to another, pushing forward, and trying to find the powers. These are more like side quests. Books like The Hobbit (a very well-written book IMO) are much more like the way you described that my series. My series is not an obstacle course of adventures where the good guy always wins. Ginevra: That helps very much. I guess I thought that making it alien could explain everything the same way magic could. Part of my inspiration for this aspect of the story was the show Smallville. The show has a lot of flaws and a lot of things that bug me (it can be a bit juvenile and repetitive), but the thing that influenced me here is that the meteor rocks (kryptonite) that came to earth and caused some people to develop powers including powers like seeing how somebody is going to die. Some got the ability when the meteor shower happened, and some got the power after prolonged exposure to the rocks. (more...)
