ShalinCraft Lampshades Multicolored Applique Embroidered Fabric Indian-Style
ShalinCraft Lampshades Multicolored Applique Embroidered Fabric Indian-Style Enjoy these lovely, colorful applique embroidered lampshades handmade in India. Among the traditional textiles of India, the art of applique work occupies a distinguished place. Applique, which is a French term, is a technique by which the decorative effect is obtained by superposing patches of colored fabrics on a basic fabric, the edges of the patches being sewn in some form of stitching. The base cloth is usually colored. Some of the specially prepared motifs have exclusive embroidery work and some have mirror work. It is Orissa and especially in Pipli that the craft has a living and active tradition continuing over centuries. As with many other handicrafts of Orissa, the roots of the applique craft form is interwined with the traditions of Lord Jagannath, the deity of the Puri temple. The applique items are mainly used during processions of the deities in their various ritual outings. The stitching process varies from item to item and come under six broad categories. Sometimes embroidered patterns are also used and in a few items mirror work is incorporated. The layout of various motifs and patterns vary according to the shape of the piece. Of the more common motifs are the elephant, parrot, peacock, ducks, creepers, trees, flowers like lotus, jasmine, half moon, the Sun and Rahu.

Away from Her
Away from Her "I'm going," says a lovely, understated Julie Christie, in a heart-wrenching moment of recognition that Alzheimer's is slowly descending on her. "But I'm not gone." Away from Her, the directorial debut of young Canadian actress Sarah Polley, allows two themes--the growth of love, and the limits of the mind--to intertwine, uplift, fall, and rise again, throughout its arc. What should be relentlessly depressing is instead a film of great courage, humor, defiance--and a quality that Christie's character, Fiona, calls out in another defining moment: grace.

Away from Her chronicles a love story between Fiona and her longtime husband, Grant, played with bearlike stolidity by Gordon Pinsett, as the couple struggle with the onset and acceleration of Fiona's Alzheimer's disease. Moments of lucidity and wry observation pepper Fiona's decline, and Christie gives an unforgettable performance as a woman who is both ordinary and singular to those whom she's touched. The story is set against a frigid Canadian winter, with fields of snow as a background underscoring the bleakness of Fiona's diagnosis; yet life is constant and surprising, in the call of a meadowlark or the resurrected memory of a skunk lily. A scene of Fiona out for her daily cross-country ski shows Christie's gorgeous, sensual face in closeup against the snow, framed by a babushka, reminding the viewer of a similar scene of the decades-younger Christie in Dr. Zhivago. It's impossible not to be touched by the gifts of this extraordinary actress, through the life of this everywoman, whose very presence is shot through with grace. --A.T Hurley

Waiting for God - Season 1
Waiting for God - Season 1 It's strange that a British comedy series in the tradition of Monty Python and Mr. Bean would sit fifteen years before being released on DVD. However, Waiting for God's humor has less slapstick mixed in with its dark, dry wit, making its style uniquely relevant to facing old age and death. The first seven episodes are collected on this disc: Welcome to Bayview, A Trip to Brighton, Cheering Up Tom, The Christening, Fraulein Mueller, The Psychiatrist, and The Helicopter. In each, elderly citizen Tom Ballard (Graham Crowden) and his grumpy spinster friend, Diana Trent (Stephanie Cole) overcome boredom and malaise within Bayview Retirement Village, having some adventures outside its confines (like when they drive a Porsche to Brighton in "A Trip to Brighton"), but mostly relying on conversation to entertain themselves. Waiting for God exemplifies smart writing paired with solid acting, since there is little dramatic action to distract from its premise. As a result, Tom and Diana's characters have well-rendered personalities, making their conversations pleasantly predictable. Tom always fantasizes, believing he can enact change, like when he stages a hunger strike against Bayview's food in "Welcome to Bayview." Diana is the quintessential pessimist, her nose always buried in a novel or in a game of solitaire to pass time until death. She's bitter towards people who "revere everything ancient except themselves." Diana and Tom bond over broken families and a love of sarcasm, and their unlikely friendship is both realistic and entertaining. Plots against their refusal to accept senior citizen status grow heated, as in "The Psychiatrist," when Harvey, Bayview's manager, aims to prove Tom and Diana mentally incompetent in order to confiscate their rights. In "The Helicopter," Tom and Diana sneak a ride in a helicopter, causing panic and chaos amongst their caretakers. Instead of poking fun at the elderly, as does the other British comedy about an old couple, Keeping Up Appearances, Waiting for God satirically highlights the absurd notion that our elders are incapable of living intelligently. --Trinie Dalton

Open Question: I'm very interested in dental hygiene. Can any hygienists out there tell me the pros and cons of the position?
I am a very indecisive young woman who is currently enrolled in a university and is majoring in respiratory therapy. Initially, I was a Bio major in hopes of becoming a dentist but the course load was too rigorous for me soooo....I changed to Resp. Therapy hoping I would be interested in it....Then it dawned on me--if I can't handle a Bio major and i want to be a dentist---why not do dental hygiene? From what I know, that would be the next step down if I wasn't going to be a dentist. I have a fetish for teeth and I do not know why. I am currently trying to make the decision of whether or not to switch to a school offering the dental hygiene program. So I'm asking the hygienists out there--- 1.What was your route of education? 2.What do employers look for/recommend in a new graduate? (i.e..What type of school attended..etc..tech or university? Which type of school looks better?) 3.Are you happy at the end of the day? 4.Do you, personally, work in a dentist's office or, in a dental hygiene practice, or...maybe for a retirement home or anything different? And last but not least---- 5. Before pursuing an education in dental hygiene, you of course knew you were interested in it, but how did you know for sure that you were going to be able to deal with being in peoples' mouthes all day and could deal with things of that sort? Open Question: New LGBT equality laws go into effect in Calif.?
Three new laws broadening protections for California?s LGBT community have gone into effect. The laws protect seniors in assisted living and young people in schools and foster care. The Foster Youth School Safety Education Act helps protect foster youth against harassment and discrimination at school. The new law educates foster care youth and their caregivers about existing California laws that protect students against bias. It was authored by Assemblymember Julia Brownley (D) and supported by the National Association of Social Workers and the Gay-Straight Alliance Network. The second new law will help prevent bias in senior care facilities and nursing homes. Authored by former Sen. Carole Migden (D) it requires licensed healthcare professionals who have constant interaction with seniors to participate in a training program that focuses on preventing discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Many health professionals already receive cultural diversity training, but it does not include information and education about LGBT issues. Basic rights, such as the choice to live in the same nursing home with a partner and the right to hospital visitation are routinely denied to same-gender couples in older age, according to a 2000 study from the Policy Institute of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. The study also found that same-gender partners lack essential protections, including Medicaid benefits and access to pensions, which typically protect the homes and retirement funds of surviving spouses who are married. The third law is the Civil Rights Act of 2008. It strengthens existing law to ensure protections based on gender, race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, disability, medical condition, marital status and sexual orientation. The law clarifies sections of law that prohibit discrimination in insurance and government services and activities. In addition to support from EQCA, it was endorsed by the California State Conference of the NAACP. Looks like a reason for optimism in CA? Maybe prop. 8 will be overturned, no? (more...)

Open Question: How do I get started with a catering business & is it worth it?
I love to cook, bake, entertain, do crafty stuff...but I've never had any professional courses. I have a business degree (go figure), but I'm not doing anything in my career that makes me happy; I certainly don't want to get my MBA (Zzzzz...will not make me happy). What would make me happy is staying home to start a very small family with my husband while earning some money doing something I'm passionate about. I'm not looking to become a billionaire, but to contribute toward our future retirement goals is a must. I have so many questions, I'm a little insecure with my lack of experience (outside my personal dinner parties, etc. - how do I compare to others?), and I'm so overwhelmed with how to get started. I'm especially concerned because I'm wanting to sell food items made in my home. I've done research, and it seems that every answer I find, five more pop into my head...it's like I never get ahead of the game enough to actually DO something other than talk about this idea. I live in a small town with little to offer in terms of culinary arts education. When I say "little", I mean "nothing". Plus, I'm worried that this sort of business wouldn't do well, period. I've heard a lot of negatives about any food type of business, but I am willing to work hard if it's worth it. I want to set myself up for success. Any advice helps and is appreciated. (more...)

Open Question: Am I obligated to work for my employer for 2 weeks after I quit?
I work at a retirement home and I've been there for a month. I hate my boss and the whole department is bullcrap. No respect and it isn't a good work enviroment. I have an opportunity to go to a different department. Am I obligated to work for my current boss for next two weeks even though I'm not in the union and he could fire me at any time? (more...)

Open Question: Who gets the child support? The parent or the child?
I am in a bit of a situation. My father disappeared when I was 2 (26 now). I had a brother and a sister. My sister had a different father and was being paid support. We were constantly moving from house to house because my mother didn't pay bills or rent, and would use my sister's child support money to buy alcohol or gifts for her boyfriends. She would feed us if she remembered to, but ordered out every night for her and her boyfriend. We were allowed to eat the leftovers. We were constantly shuffled between months spent at my grandparents or uncles, and wherever my mom was living. She allowed her boyfriends to abuse us, and we were nearly removed from the home multiple times. My real father was found when I was 17, and was ordered to pay back support. By this time my brother and I had been living with our grandparents for nearly 3 years and my mother had given up parental rights. My grandma got the small amount of money my father sent, which wasn't a problem since my brother and I both had jobs for 2 years at that point. I found out today that my real mother is still being paid child support for us, about $100 a month. She had accused my grandmother of stealing support from my brother and me, saying she didn't raise us and the children (my brother and I) were supposed to get the money. I don't really care because my grandpa had to come out of retirement to support us, so IMO they needed it. Then I found out that it's actually my mother who is receiving money even now, and is being paid about $20,000 total. About half of it is going to the state because of overuse of government aid, but is she entitled to that money or am I or my grandparents? I'm confused and quite a bit hurt over the whole situation. Open Question: Starting a job as a care assistant, any advice?
Hi all, A couple of weeks before Christmas I was offered a job as a Care Assistant in a retirement home down the road from me. I was really excited about this as I'd worked as admin staff for the past couple of years and was really looking forward to a complete change of direction work-wise. I've always done lots of support volunteer work etc, although it's only been with students and young people. I start work tomorrow, and I'm so NERVOUS! To the point where for the past couple of nights I've been dreaming about it constantly and I'm worrying myself silly! I'm scared that once I start I won't be able to handle it, which is daft as they obviously think I can do the work if they employed me. I know it's probably the usual pre-new-job-jitters, but are there any other fellow care workers out there who can give me a few tips or reassurance? Thanks :) (more...)

Open Question: Recovery Rebate Credit Got to be #1 Asked Question for 2008?
Recovery Rebate Credit (as copied from IRS website) For 2008, you generally can claim a recovery rebate credit of up to $600 ($1,200 if married filing jointly). Generally, the credit cannot be more than your 2008 net income tax liability (your regular tax liability plus any alternative minimum tax (AMT), minus any nonrefundable credits you claimed other than the child tax credit). However, your credit will be at least $300 ($600 if married filing jointly) if you meet either of the following two conditions: A. The total of your earned income, social security benefits (including social security disability payments), tier 1 railroad retirement benefits, certain veterans benefits, and nontaxable combat pay you elect to include in earned income is at least $3,000, or B. Your total income (Form 1040, line 22; Form 1040A, line 15; or Form 1040EZ, line 4) is more than $8,950 if your filing status is single or married filing separately ($11,500 if head of household; $14,400 if qualifying widow(er); $17,900 if married filing jointly), and your net income tax liability is more than zero. If you meet either of these conditions, you can also get an additional $300 for each of your children who is a qualifying child for the child tax credit. To be eligible, you and your spouse each must have a valid social security number. To get the additional $300 credit for a child, the child must have a valid social security number. However, a valid social security number is not required for you, your spouse, or any qualifying child(ren) if you file a joint return and either you or your spouse was a member of the U.S. Armed Forces at any time during 2008. You are not eligible for the credit if you can be claimed as a dependent of another taxpayer, or if you file Form 1040NR, 1040NR-EZ, 1040-PR, or 1040-SS. If your 2008 AGI is more than $75,000 ($150,000 if married filing jointly), your credit will be reduced by 5% of your AGI in excess of that amount. Credit reduced or eliminated by economic stimulus payment.Your credit is reduced by any economic stimulus payment you received in 2008. However, if your credit is less than the stimulus payment you received, you do not have to repay the difference. Someone please put this one in layman's terms. Example: On her 2008 taxes, Jane claimed $28,500 as her total earned incomed (Line 15 on 1040A Form). On her 2008 taxes she will claim EIC for one child, as well as interest paid on home ($4,500), medical, etc. When April rolled around she received a $900 Economic Stimulus Check. Which does she use: "you generally can claim a recovery rebate credit of up to $600" or "your credit will be at least $300 if you meet either of the following two conditions". Condition B was met: $11,500 as head of household is more than $8,950. So for her Recovery Rebate Credit will she use $300 or $600, plus the child's $300? Too confusing! (more...)

Resolved Question: Movie: Seven Pounds; How was the grandma in Seven Pounds being tortured?
I watched the movie Seven Pounds with Will Smith in it (amazing movie) but I didn't get how in the retirement home the grandma that couldn't talk was being tortured. She said how the manager guy tortured her and they didn't show you what he did to her but Will Smith ended up making her take a bath... so what did the guy do to her that was so bad? (more...)
