Open Question: how much do i need..?
i asked this question before but didn't really get the answer to the question i asked. so here's the question : how much should i save up before buying a horse? (i live in the north east, uk) by this i mean the ongoing costs after buying and not the initial cost of a horse. i know the costs included in keeping a horse, its just like how many months board, worming, insurance, feed etc should i save up. i know there's always the problem of getting emergency vet fees which i have got like Ł15k back-up saved which a wouldn't want to spend otherwise i know its not all about saving up and its about the ongoing cost, and worked out that i would have enough per month to afford one as i would prefferably be getting a cob just for hacking im just wondering how many months in advance i should save up? Resolved Question: I want your personal opinion, Do you think i'll turn out bad?
I am 19. I still live at home. I do not pay for my cell phone, I am not on my own plan and won't be till March 2010, thats when the contract is up. It'd be 200+ to take me off. I don't pay for any bills. The only thing my mom doesn't pay for is my health insurance and my college pays for that. My grandmother is paying for the first half of my college. If I get C's or higher then I get my money back for this semester. That money is going into a car so I can get a job starting this summer at my county's sheriff's department. I will not have a job till then since I do not have a car and my mom wants me to focus on school. I will be living at home till I am done with the police academy and am situated in my job and have some money saved up. So late 2010. Right now, its like I live at Club Med. I don't start school till the 26th. I get to sleep in everyday. I have easy to prepare food. I basically sit and watch tv, use my laptop and thats about it. I clean up after the messes I make. Also, I have a TON of time to physically train for the academy and do ride alongs to learn more. All my mom ask is that I am awake before noon and showered and ready before my brother is home from school. Even when I start my classes, I will only have classes 3 days a week. M 3-5:45 TU 6-8:45 and F 11:30-1 As soon as I am a cop, I will be making almost $4,000 a month, I will be get my own apartment and I'll put 1,000 of that into savings every month. I can live comfortably on the rest. Many people would say that I need to have multiple jobs, taking bus transportation(since I don't have a car) and that I need to be paying for things all on my own, living in my own apartment. Or atleast be working and paying my mom room and board. I am grateful for this, I am so happy my mom isn't like other parents. Ill start saving now so when she is old and retired can have a house on the beach. Do you think my mom should be doing things differently? Do you think i'll end up lazy or whatnot because of this? I do my own laundry as well. So its like I dont even live here, except the chips and soda go fast than if I didn't. Oh and I will also be doing the explorers program with the police department. Its like training before the training. (more...)

Open Question: What are my rights as a renter?
Here's the situation: The house I've been renting has accumulated a number of problems over the past 10 years, including ant infestation, swelling floor boards, leaking faucets, and numerous counts of water damage. The worst thing is the roof. It is covered in moss that has never been removed. The landlord has not repaired any of this, even upon request. Last Saturday, due to all the leakage from the roof, part of the ceiling in one of the bedrooms collapsed. About a 4' wide hole remains. Luckily, it did not fall on anyone, but once it started raining the hole started dripping water into the room. We notified the landlord of the hole on Saturday, and he came to see it. He said he would call his insurance agent on Monday. We don't have the means to move, or else we would have by now. What can I do about this? Isn't it his responsibility to do all these repairs? What do I do if he takes forever to get the roof repaired? Can we sue? I've decided to hold the rent payment until something gets done, but I want to know what my rights are here. I am in Washington State (more...)

Open Question: Not allowed to see where puppy will be boarded?
I recently boarded our puppy for 4 days because we were going out of town. When I dropped her off I asked to see the room she would be staying in. The woman told me that no one was allowed to go back there during the holidays because of their insurance policies. The lobby of this placed looked nice, and the lady was very polite, but isn't it strange that I was not allowed to see where my puppy was staying? Is this normal? (more...)

Voting Question: College Student and Independent tax return?
I'm 22 and a full time student (16 credits). I pay for my own tuition, books, and other misc. school expenses. I also pay a relatively small monthly "boarding fee" to live at home. My parents are dropping me from their insurance this month. I teach music lessons to get through school and have made close to 10K while taking 16 credits. Can they feasibly claim me as a dependent and keep taking tax reducing "education credits" for me? It doesn't seem to be adding up. I don't qualify for medicaid and will have to go without insurance. I also pay my own car bill and car insurance. It seems to me that this year I should be filing as an independent? It is my concern that because I have made 10K, that should they make me file as a dependent I will need to pay more in taxes than if I filed as an independent? I've kept good business logs and think with proper deductions I'd pay a lot less as an independent. Thanks so far everyone. As far as food and clothes go...that is all me. I usually cook for everyone when I am around. Most of what I eat at the house is breakfast, and even with that if we are out of something I go buy it. I didn't think I had to make an issue out of it until this. Market value for the room is definitely fair game for them (I pay 200 a month for a room in a 4 bedroom house)...but how many people do you know that would move into a house with 3 other people and live in close quarters? I've rarely seen that when I was looking for places, and even then it was an elderly person looking to give board to a yardsman. I'd think it would be a conflict of interest with a teenage daughter in the house? I'll check out that sheet. (more...)

Resolved Question: Anyone who works at an veterinary hospital, please answer.?
I have been a vet tech for a small practice in VT for a little over 4 years. My boss is in his 60's and wants to retire but doesn't due to retirement/health insurance and plans to work until he is 65. His wife who also works there is very anti-social and does not see clients. I was more or less happy there until about 3-4 months ago they started to change. I suspect they are using medicines from the hospital for themselves. They have started raising bills and charging for things not done or used. They also have been treating animals in harsh manners and instead of looking something up in a medical book they will google whatever they want and go with some random answer they have found online. They do procedures they have never done before and don't bother telling the clients that they have never done it. They also charge an arm and a leg for these procedures and if it goes wrong the client has to pay for a second surgery or extra medications to correct their mistakes. I have completely had it. I have worked as a tech for years and have never seen doctors with fewer morals than they seen to have lately. So here's the question, what do I do? It is a very small clinic, I am 1 of 2 techs. Since I have been there 2 other techs have left and 1 doctor has left all for similar reasons but none of them really said that to the boss. I am honest and I had enough, I told them that I thought they were immoral and unethical and all of the other stuff I mentioned above, they decided I was having personal problems at home and that's why I was upset. Does anyone know what can be done, if anything? Can I call the state board and say I suspect them to be medicating themselves? Can I call the state vet and tell them they are not practicing good medicine and they are cruel to the animals. Is there anything I can do that might help the poor pets and clients who go to this hospital? Please answer if you have any thoughts at all. Thank you (sorry this is so long) They are being sued, a cat died as a result of their carelessness. I assume they will settle out of court. I have done a lot of research over the past few months and it seems there are very little laws about this sort of thing. Veterinarians are bound by ethics but no ethics are listed that I can find. I have found very little to go on in the sense of turning them in to someone. I assume if they are using medication if I turn them into the right source they will be held responsible. (more...)

Resolved Question: Babys father is beyond cheap!?
He has two jobs, free room & board where he lives, a paid car & no other children...he has money. When I got preg at first, like so many men, he was happy. A few weeks later and all of a sudden he didn't think the baby was his & still denies it. He told me that if I want to pay for him take the DNA test then and only then will he pay anything for the baby. I had no health insurance, got kicked out of family member's home due to beign pregnant and had my car break down forcing me to walk to the bus station for appointments in freezing cold weather. He has done NOTHING for me. I don't want him on the birth certificate at all. Does that effect getting child support? He would be requesting a DNA test anyway. How do I protect my rights to my child & privacy when I do go about getting a child support order? Does visitation rights get argued or only if you were married to him ( and we were not). I am in VA, btw. Thanks! (more...)

Resolved Question: Is it fair to charge my child chores and room and board?
I am having a disagreement with my daughter. She boarded at school last year which left me with a $27,000 debt. She flunked out - didn't even earn one credit for all that money . Is living at home this year going to school online and working full time . I have asked her to do one small chore a day and pay $200 a month board. I even give her back $50 back as a bribe if she doesn't overdraft her checking account( which she was doing excessively paying the fees) so actually ends up $150 a month. In return I pay all her bills including car insurance ,cell phone, tuition, books - all much more than the $200 a month yet she complains and fights with me and says is unfair. Seems more than fair to me when alternative is to give her all her bills. I am now on disability and barely making ends meet - yet she somehow thinks I should cover all her bills without help while she keeps all her pay as play money and leaves the house a mess - not helping around the home at all. I am tired of fighting with her and having her so unhappy. Like other's opinions. Am I wrong to think she should help at the age of 20 working full time with a disabled parent? She actually had the nerve to tell me today that I sit on couch and get my money and she works for hers so she wants to keep it. I was crushed at work in an accident last year and am still recovering hoping to go back to work - trying to survive on 60 percent of my salary . Thanks for your input. Thanks to all for responses so far. Good to read that I am not off base as she makes me feel I am at times. I don't know where I lost authority over her. Have told her if this was a job she'd have been fired long ago. She says I don't appreciate her or love her but is other way around. I have told her if she doesn't like the arrangement she can move out and although I would hate to do it - may have to force her to for her own good Thanks again to all (more...)

Resolved Question: How would you feel about this, I feel like a victim?
I started out seeing a pediatrician for my daughter because he was close to our house and some people gave him good reviews on Yahoo. I met him and liked him so that was it. Everything was fine until Mallorys' 4mth checkup. The doctor said he could no longer see Mallory past 6mths unless I chose to further immunize her. I asked him why and he said it was stipulation of his malpractice insurance. When I asked for their name so I could write a letter he acted like he was drawing a blank. This did upset me because recommending is one thing and forcing is another in my opinion. When leaving the office it was the usual, go up to the counter in the waiting room, make my copayment, and be on my way. They asked if I wanted to schedule her next appointment and I said no, that we would not be back and we left. Over the past month I have thought long and hard and have dediced to move forward with the vaccinations. I called them last week and left a message with the nurse but never heard back. So today I called again to follow up and I was transferred to Karen the office manager. Long story short, she tells me she has to talk to the doctor becuase she was told I threw a chart at the nurse and it hit her in the head and that I told them I wouldn't be back. Let me just say this is absolutly not true. I have never even "held" Mallory's chart, ever. The doctor always has it. I told her it was not true and asked for the name of the person who said this. she said she couldn't tell me. I told her it was not true and she said she has a pretty reliable staff. I told her to just forget the appointment that I did not wish to continue this ( I"m in total shock on the phone here). I immediately logged a complaint with the state board. I guess I'd like to get your opinon. I am just having a hard time understanding why someone who is suppose to care about the well being of children would treat us this way? just wanted to add that the part that is not true is the throwing of the chart. I did tell them we would not be back ( nicely of course, although this is not positive information) (more...)
