The Believer
The Believer Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, and one of the most acclaimed independent films of recent years, The Believer is a daring and courageous portrayal of a young Jewish man living an impossible contradiction as a neo-Nazi. Danny Balint (Ryan Gosling) is an intense young man whose fierce intelligence and inexhaustible curiosity once made him a star pupil at his local Yeshiva. Now, at age twenty-two, he focuses this intensity on altogether more sinister aims; as a rising star in local neo-fascist circles, Danny spends his days attacking synagogues and fomenting hate among a devoted band of followers. Yet while working tirelessly to realize the destruction of his own people, Danny finds himself inexplicably drawn back to Judaism. This terrible inconsistency in the heart of Danny's soul - the yearning to study Torah and to attack Jews - and the avoidance of easy psychological explanations, make The Believer one of the year's most complex and provocative films.

Open Question: Jews, what is the best way to approach a rabbi about converting to Judaism?
I want to convert to Judaism but I'm pretty nervous because I haven't been to the shul before at all. I don't know anyone in the Orthodox community yet, and I don't want to look an intruder from out of the blue, as it is a close knit community. But I've thought long about this and being Jewish is something I've really wanted for a long time, I'm 19 and I knew I wanted to do this since I was 12. Someone told me that it would be better to do some things in the community like take classes at the synagogue and go to community events, before approaching the rabbi so he and other people can see I'm really interested, instead of approaching the rabbi out of the blue and saying I want to convert. But I don't know what would be best. I know an Orthodox rabbi is suppose to turn down someone at least three times too. Does anyone who's Jewish have any suggestions for me? Sharon: From everything I've read and everything my Jewish friends have said, anybody can convert to Orthodox Judaism as long as they're truly sincere about it. (more...)

Resolved Question: I feel kind of stupid asking this but....?
So the police came to my house today and told us my aunt died. I mean I'm sad but i really wasn't close with her at all and I rarely saw her. My parents are really upset though. The problem is, i was supposed to go to this dance tonight with my friend and I've been looking forward to it for months, plus if I don't go my friend would have no one to go with (It's through our synagogue). I really hope I can still go but I don't know what my parents want me to do and I'm afraid to ask. Do you think they assume I'm not going or assume I am still going? What should I say to them? Voting Question: Any college recommendations?
I'm a sophomore in high school (10th grade) , and my parents have started taking me around to look at colleges (they wanted to give me an early start.) I'm kind of undecided of what I want to do but it's down to: some sort of bio/chemical/medical (or a combo of the three) enginerring, nanotechnology, or some type of robotics. I have a great passion for biology, and am taking chemistry 1 this year, and love it, and I like imagining and creating somewhat simple robots (with Legos :o). Here's my profile: AP European History - Solid A (Highest level available) Honors AE Chemistry 1 - Solid A (Highest level available) (I have been in the Gifted Program since 2nd grade) Honors English - High A (Second highest to pre-AP English - both worth 4.5) Honors Math 1 - Low B (Highest Available - worth 4.5) Spanish 3 - High A Other assorted electives - photography, wind ensemble (I play tenor sax, wind ensemble is highest level of band) I'm also in marching band and planning on joining photo club/foreign language club. I do community service and charity regularly with my synagogue and with my family. I live in lower PA, and I want to kinda stay close to home (not too close). My parents have already taken me to Lehigh University, and I liked it. I'm going to Drexel next week, and that's also an option. My other choices are: MIT Carnegie Melon Pitt Penn State U Penn I took the SATs in 7th grade through a gifted program, and got around a 1200 on the new system. I've taken the PSAT's twice, one last year as a freshman (I got a 1580), and the second time recently, so I didn't get my scores back. If anyone could recommend me to any college, that would be great and I would be so grateful. Thank you!!! (more...)

Voting Question: Was Jesus a Socialist ?
Deut. 26:5-9. The Egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us, and imposed hard labor on us. Then we cried to the LORD, the God of our fathers, and the LORD heard our voice and saw our affliction and our toil and our oppression; and the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm and with great terror and with signs and wonders; and He has brought us to... this land flowing with milk and honey. Luke 4:16-21. And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read... "The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because He appointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are downtrodden, to proclaim the favorable year of the LORD... Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." Ps. 140:12. I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and justice for the poor. Is. 25:4. For You have been a defense for the helpless, a defense for the needy in his distress. Ps. 10:14. The unfortunate commits himself to You; You have been the helper of the orphan... O LORD, You have heard the desire of the humble; You will strengthen their heart, You will incline Your ear to vindicate the orphan and the oppressed. Is 41:17. The afflicted and needy are seeking water, but there is none, and their tongue is parched with thirst. I, the LORD, will answer them Myself, as the God of Israel I will not forsake them. Luke 6:20-21. Blessed are you who are poor, for yours in the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh. James 2:5. Did not God choose the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him? Commentary: I think it's fair to say that American attitudes toward the poor-- and perhaps not just in America-- are mostly disdain and fear. They're dangerous and different. Sometimes there's a suspicion that their condition is their own fault, that they're simply lazy or inferior. Other Americans are more kind-hearted, but prefer not to look at the poor too closely; it's depressing, and they're surely not fun people to be with. These attitudes are a world away from God's attitudes, as described in these verses. Neediness arouses compassion in God-- and action. We may think: "Of course God loves the poor; he loves everybody." But it's not so simple as that; God's character is presented as a model for our own. If God values the poor, we have to think about what that means for us. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- God's commands concerning the poor This section collects some specific commands from Old and New Testaments on serving the poor. Deut. 15:7. If there is a poor man among you, one of your brothers, in any of the towns of the land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart, nor close your hand to your poor brother; but you shall freely open your hand to him, and generously lend him sufficient for his need in whatever he lacks. Deut. 26:12. When you have finished paying the complete tithe of your increase in the third year, the year of tithing, then you shall give it to the Levite, to the stranger, to the orphan and the widow, that they may eat in your towns, and be satisfied. Lev. 19:19ff. Now when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very corners of your field, neither shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest. Nor shall you glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather the fallen fruit of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the needy and for the stranger. I am the LORD your God. Prov. 31:8ff. [Commandment to kings.] Open your mouth for the dumb, for the rights of all the unfortunate. Open your mouth, judge righteously, and defend the rights of the afflicted and needy. Is. 58:66ff. Is this not the fast which I choose, to loosen the bonds of wickedness, to undo the bands of the yoke, and to let the oppressed go free, and break every yoke? Is it not to divide your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into the house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh? Jer. 22:3. Do justice and righteousness, and deliver the one who has been robbed from the power of his oppressor. Also do not mistreat or do violence to the stranger, the orphan, or the widow; and do not shed innocent blood in this place. Luke 12:33. "Sell your possessions and give to charity; make yourselves purses which do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near, nor moth destroys." Luke 3:11. And [John the Baptist] would answer and say to them, "Let the man with two tunics share with him who has none, and let him who has food do likewise. (more...)

Resolved Question: Isn't prayer in school against the words of Jesus?
Mathew 6:3 Prayer And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth they have recieved their reward in full. But when you pray go into your room, close the door and pray to your father, who is unseen. Then your father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. Wow, really good answers today! (more...)

Resolved Question: Christians you claim that Jesus was about compassion and grace, if so then how come the church had him kill ?
All through Matthew 23 Jesus expose the Pharisees to the people letting the people know, that the Pharisees were pretty much like the church of today, hypocritical and worthless. Jesus did not show one inch of compassion to the Pharisees and the scribes but put their business out there for the world, not the church but the world to see and learn from. Matthew 23:1-4 Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, Saying The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not. For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. sounds familiar, how does the saying go today, you talk the talk but when it's time to walk the walk, you have all kind of excuses of why you aren't doing what you are commanded. If you continue to read on, it was the things that Jesus said that ticked the Pharisees off. Jesus showed his compassion toward the world and he put the church business out there. this is why the Pharisees sought him out to have him killed. Jesus was to busy exposing them for who and what they were. Matthew 23:13-19 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves. Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor! Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty. Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift? Matthew 23:23-37 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous, And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets. Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers. Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell? Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city: That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation. O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Now if you pay real close attention, if you go to John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. Preachers will tell you that Jesus is talking about the devil when in truth, Jesus is talking about the Pharisees and the scribes, not the devil at all. the church don't want people pointing fingers at them so they took John 10:10 and try putting the blame on the devil but if you start with John 9:40-41 and so forth, you will see that Jesus is not talking about the devil at all. So my question to the church i (more...)

Resolved Question: As a christian do you belive the gospel of jesus so called ( gospel of bernaba ) ?
Barnabas was a Jew born in Cyrus. His name was Joses, and due to his devotion to the cause of Jesus, the other apostles had given him the surname of Barnabas; this term is variously translated as "Son of Consolation" or "Son of Exhortation". He was a successful preacher with a magnetic personality. Any one tormented by the clash of creeds found solace and peace in his company. His eminence as a man who had been close to Jesus had made him a prominent member of the small group of disciples in Jerusalem who had gathered together after the disappearance of Jesus. They observed the Law of the Prophets, which Jesus had come, "not to destroy but, to fulfil" (Matthew 5:17). They continued to live as Jews and practiced what Jesus had taught them. That Christianity could ever be regarded as a new religion did not occur to any of them. They were devout and practicing Jews distinguished from their neighbours only by their faith in the message of Jesus. In the beginning they did not organise themselves as a separate sect and did not have a synagogue of their own. There was nothing in the message of Jesus, as understood by them, to necessitate a break with Judaism. However, they incurred the enmity of the vested interests among the Jewish higher echelon. The conflict between the Jews and the followers of Jesus was started by the Jews because they felt that the Christians would undermine their authority. (more...)

Resolved Question: Are the far-right conservatives mentioned in Matthew 6:5?
"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. @Deacon Blues - I shalt not understandeth that writing stylethththththththhh! BTW, everytime I look up, it's the far right that's bible thumping and "pointing fingers"! Thank you for acknowledging your faults. (more...)
