Resolved Question: Is it good to invest in Africa, probably in Ghana?
Ghana's `Forgotten' Stock Market Beats World Equities (Update1)
By Janice Kew and Emily Bowers
Oct. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Vendors hawking handbags and fruit along downtown Accra's Liberia Road are busier than the traders five stories upstairs on the Ghana Stock Exchange.
An offshore-oil discovery, rising commodity prices and government spending on roads and other projects drove the market to a 63 percent gain this year, making it the world's best- performing bourse.
Then volume on the market fell to 23,875 shares daily over the last four weeks, a 20th of the average for the past six months. This left investors unable to flee even as stocks in nearby Nigeria declined 44 percent since March 5. On some days, almost no shares have changed hands in the Cedi House Building.
``It's hard to call it a stock market because of the liquidity levels,'' said Don Elefson, an emerging-markets specialist at Harding Loevner Management in Somerville, New Jersey. ``Ghana's a little market that gets forgotten.''
The path of Ghana's All-Share Index diverged from the Merrill Lynch African Lions Index on March 5, climbing 54 percent as the broader measure of bourses started a 60 percent plunge.
``Ghana missed out on the initial Africa bull run and is now playing catch-up,'' said Cape Town-based Roelof Horne, who helps manage $1 billion in Investec's Africa Fund and Pan-Africa Fund.
Stock-market development in the country of 22.5 million, sandwiched between Togo and Ivory Coast, has trailed neighbors such as Nigeria. The Lagos exchange has 219 listed companies and a valuation of about 10 trillion naira ($80 billion) as of September, compared with Accra's 34 listed companies worth 18.1 billion cedis ($15.5 billion).
Ghana's All-Share Index today lost 0.1 percent to 10,788.29, while Nigeria's benchmark tumbled 3.5 percent.
Electronic Trading
Unlike Nigeria, Ghana doesn't have electronic trading, according to the market's Web site. Traders scribble bid and asking prices on whiteboards. That's forecast to change before the end of the year, according to the exchange's general manager, Ekow Afedzie.

Resolved Question: What is numerical intuition?
"You need to be of degree (or similar) calibre and have good numerical intuition. It would be advantageous is you have exposure to financial concepts and have worked with [here are listed some of j2ee technologies]"
Maybe someone could give some examples, to explain in greater detail, what does it mean. Is the ability of valuation they are looking for? (numerical intuition = ability to valuate)
.. and btw. what does it mean "or similar" in this context? Degree is for me PhD, MSc, MA, BSc etc. but what can 'similar' mean?
Thanks in advance for answering.

Resolved Question: Telling, isn't it? That the AP blames falling oil prices on lower demand as opposed to a potentially stronger?
dollar?
If passage of the bailout had depended on the approval of the People, it would have either died instantly or been rewritten to reward those who borrowed and were hurt as well as the most cautious lenders.
Oil is artificially expensive ---> in DOLLARS <--- not other currencies.
The sooner we stop permitting our servants in government to scribble money into existence... backed by less reality & mass than the totality of Alley McBeal ... the sooner we'll have a sound currency, cheaper goods and services and a predictable (if occasionally difficult [hey! humans are made to handle occasional difficulty!]) currency valuation.
Check the list of senatorial votes on this debacle. If your Senator voted "yea", come the election, you vote, "nay".
Same with any congressional rep who didn't express outright disgust and condemnation for the bill.
I think the nicest thing in all this is the transparency. None of these jello-heads can talk their way out of "wrong equals wrong". Though, of course, they'll do their best.
So, is it at all surprising to see this "cotton-candy" coverage of the issue?

Resolved Question: Of all the professionals who do you trust the least?
I have a top 5 of untrusty professionals and occupationalists.
1 Estate agents
2 Housebuilders
3 MP's
4 Solicitors
5 Civil Servants
In 1995 the tyneside terrace flat was anything from 27 thousand to 40 thousand. The price asked for very much depended on the condition of the properties and how many rooms each property had. The same notion applied apparently in 1998 when a slight rise in price took the said same properties to 33 thousand and 49 thousand respectfully. In the year 2000 these properties rose again in apparent value to 54 thousand and 65 thousand. In 2001 the said same properties were valued in the region of 77 thousand and 88 thousand. Today an upstairs flat will cost a 190k or 210k and a downstairs flat around 170k or 180.
The reality here is nearly a 1,000% price hike set by estate agents valuing properties. The properties aren't selling unless someone puts in offers a good deal less than the asking price. This means someone who has bought a property with a mortgage at an inflated price will end up with negative equity.
A similar situation can happen with a new build.
Hence my top two positions will always be filled by Estate agents and housebuilders.
These people deliberately went out of there way to over estimate the valuations of properties, that in my view is criminal. They have created the impossible situation for young people to buy and get on the property ladder and of those who successfully manage they are a) either stuck because of negative equity or b) stuck with a lifetime mortgage and possibly the chance of having there homes repossed. What a disaster this is by the careless and greedy to collect commissions on housesales.
I can't remember what the statistics are but it makes for grim reading and sadly children suffer educationally because of it.
I won't write as much about the next three except to say that MP"s always strike me as totally removed from reality. They are over paid for what they do, they have expense accounts for which they are legible to keep tags on to prove official costs, the latter is equitable to a second income. Also far to many MP's do have 2nd and 3rd jobs without the salary and responsibilities that comes with being an MP in Britain. Rules need changing here to prohibit MP"s earning from second and third sources when they are presumably dedicated to their regions.
Members of the legal profession are also overpaid for what work they do and it is time for maybe more reasonable and user friendly legal services to be made available in Britain.
Last on my list is Civil Servants not because of the jobs they have, filing dealing with claimants etc, but mainly because of the attitudes they have towards people who need help. These people because they are in secure jobs will always be needed, but they do not understand the troubles and financial dilemmas that face people today who are in the lowest social groups. Or those who have just had there home repossed. They are often referred to a faceless administration one of the mechanisations of state.
If you ever have need to talk to one you will wait and wait and wait ...even when there is an abundance staff available they all appear to have important jobs to do whilst you wait. Those jobs are combing ones hair, filing ones nails, doodling on a peice of paper, holding a conversation with some other civil servant across the room about their holidays, maybe its a phone conversation about a night out on the tiles sometimes the job is so important a civil servant will often sit staring into space - whilst you wait.
Civil servants tend not to really listen, when they do decide to stir. But rather they tell you what it is they think you should say, fill in, look for. Often a civil servant will send a prospective job seeker after unsuitable jobs for the sake of saying well I have filled my quota of recommendations for today.
So its not just a case of finding 60 applicants after one job but 20 of them are not suitable applicants in the first place.
Civil servants at the end of the day would say well I believe I've given of my best and I have served the people. Yet some are also the most sceptical and condeming of employees. In my view civil servants and indeed all of those in secure well paid jobs need to experience life as an unemplyed person in receipt of less than 3k a year, living in a council house and having to find the means to pay these extroadinarily exorbitant bills that ordinary householders are now facing.
Who would be your top three of non trustworthy professionals and why?

Voting Question: Accounting Help?
If a company uses a percentage of net sales in computing the amount of uncollectible accounts expense:
1. No valuation allowance will be required.
2.The relationship between revenue and expenses is being stressed more than the valuation of receivables at the balance sheet date.
3. The existing balance in the Allowance for Doubtful Accounts will be increased sufficiently to equal the probable loss indicated by the percentage of net sales computation.
4. Any past-due accounts will be listed as a separate item in the balance sheet.

Resolved Question: "Now that house prices are falling dramatically does anyone expect their council tax follow suit?
In what exciting time we live under the self-proclaimed 'best chancellor ever and I now declare myself Prime Minister' Brown, now revealed as possibly the most incompetent holder of both positions.
The value of our homes are falling week by week but, is their a gleam of sunlight appearing through the clouds?
Our own house, a fifty-year-old semi, has now been reduced in value to such an extent that according to my local council's tax bands my abode should be downgraded, and the older humbler dwellings removed from the list altogether.)
MP's should claim 50% less in their claims for secondary housing, except in the case of Ed Balls and his spouse Yvette Balls Cooper, who appear to be fiddling this allowance anyway and with impunity.
Any chance of a council tax rebate, or the scrapping of those useless home valuation packs of the aforementioned Yvette's?
I'm not holding my breath, are you?
