Prelude: The Best of Charlotte Church
Need more evidence of the record industry's obsession with youth? Consider that budding Welsh diva Charlotte Church was a ripe, old 16 when this, her first greatest-hits anthology was released. Spanning her first four releases, as well as some outside collaborations and unreleased material, this 18-track collection underscores the soprano's seemingly boundless potential--as well as some potential career obstacles ahead. Her crystalline, still-maturing voice is best showcased on classically oriented works like Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Pie Jesu," Franck's "Panis Angelicus," and her now-ubiquitous rendering of Delibes' "Flower Duet." She also excels on folk traditionals such as "She Moved Through the Fair" and "My Langan Love." But overwrought productions like the already-dated "Dream a Dream" and "Habanera," a faux-flamenco take on Bizet, nearly get the best of her. Still, her promising duet with fellow young phenom Josh Groban on "The Prayer" and her mature, dreamy reading of A Beautiful Mind's "All Love Can Be," as well as strong performances on the previously unreleased "It's the Heart That Matters Most" and "Bridge over Troubled Waters," are ample evidence of her potential for rewarding pop crossover--if she doesn't retire by 21. --Jerry McCulley

Voting Question: What Breed is my dog/dog tips?
Hi Everyone,
I've never owned any pets before and my only education on pet care is through what I have read online. I would really appreciate any help I can get so that I know how to properly care for my dog. My boy friend and I think he might be a Daschund mix and my sister says he looks like he might be mixed with a welsh corgi Pembroke too, but we're not too sure. He's sausage shaped and has short legs. He's mostly black but has some brown spots on his head, chest, and belly. I think his fur is short and straight. He has pointy ears. His tail is about 7 inches and is straight/slightly curls upward when he's happy. He's looks like a medium sized dog; about a foot long and 9 inches or so.
In terms of temperament he seems really friendly. He rarely barks unless the door bell rings, if our friends come over, or when I'm holding his dog toy. It seems strange to me and slightly scary because he starts growling at me when I'm trying to play with him; especially when I pick up his toy and try to play fetch with him. It seems scary to me because he doesn't growl or bark at me other than when I'm trying to play with him. He like to be outside and goes nuts when he sees his collar and leash, but he doesn't like to be outside our backyard by himself. He usually follows me around the house. I think he has separation anxiety or maybe I'm not letting him go outside often enough, but he only pees when no one is home. He is usually pretty good about not peeing/poop inside our house. He really likes having a lot of attention and jumps when he sees his dog treats. He doesn't chew on any wires or furniture, but whines when we're sleeping (He sleeps outside in our living room). He is really smart. In the short time that I've had him I've taught him how to leave things alone, come, stay, sit, and stand. When he's outside in our back yard, he covers himself with dirt and then pees where our neighbor's dog appears to be on the other side of the fence. I don't know what our neighbor's dog is, but it sounds pretty big. It scares me when it thrashes at the fence; my dog then starts to bark at it after he purposely pees there. Sometimes after he pees or poops, it looks like he covers it with dirt.
Here are some pictures of him that I have taken.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm171/b3bumble/IMG_0337.jpg
I've only had him for about a week now so I don't know how old he is. I've been feeding him puppy food because I figured that puppy food is more nutritious and I feel like he acts like a puppy. He usually is seeking my attention. My dog appeared at my front door shivering and whining in the cold. Although I'm slightly allergic to dogs (my chest feels like it slightly closes up and my throat and ears seem to itch), it seemed pretty heartless to send him back out in the freezing cold and he was so friendly I couldn't find it in my heart to send him to the dog shelter neither. I haven't owned any dogs or any pets before so I really have no clue if I'm treating him with enough attention. I've been reading online on how to train my dog and how to care for him too, still I don't know if I'm doing it correctly. I constantly try to keep his water bowl full and he only seems to want to eats once a day around dinner time. He seems to always wants to go for walks, but it is freezing outside; I don't know how often he needs to be walked. Can anyone help me please? I would greatly appreciate it!!!
Thank you!

Resolved Question: Why do some female celebs think its cool to be loud mouthed, trashy?
unladylike and common-as-dogs-muck?
I'm a very working class Welsh girl, we're not posh, or rich at all, but I was always brought up to act and talk nicely, not to swear etc and to generally be "ladylike". Its not a class thing, its just good upbringing, surely?
So when I see the foul mouthed likes of Charlotte Church cursing through her terrible "chat show" or Jordan staggering out of a club so pished she can't stand up, with her knickers hanging out of her skirt, or Jodie Marsh showing off her lastest set of "assets" in an outfit which is little more than dental floss I just don't get it.
Does anyone else just think this behaviour is naaaasty? Maybe I'm old (37) but I just wasn't brought up to act like that . . .

Resolved Question: Printed below is a statement written by Neil Clark, of the National Union of Journalists in Britain?
What is written below, was not written by me, my heading explains, but I agree 100% with it's content.
I would appreciate "everybody" reading the entire length of this article, because it is important.
It does not matter what country you live, because both America and the UK have the same low income tax, free market systems, endorsed todate by all American leaders, while our UK system was endorsed by Margaret Thatcher in the 80's.
So please take the time to read and digest in full, because I want to be overwhelmed by responses. Please read as follows, and tell me what you think.

One Hundred Years of Old Age Pensions
Here's my article to mark the centenary of old age pensions, from the Daily Express. And if, like me, you think it's about time that Britain's political elite gave our OAPs the fair deal they deserve, then please lend your support, in whatever way you can to the National Pensioners Convention. The key hallmark of a civilied society is how it treats its old folk-and by that measure Britain, with the lowest state pension in the EU, is failing badly.
It has been described as the most momentous date in British social history, the day on which the modern welfare state was born. One hundred years ago (on 7th May 1908), Prime Minister Herbert Asquith announced his government?s intention to introduce an Old Age Pensions bill. For the first time in British history, the elderly would receive a pension from the state.
The idea of a universal old-age pension, payable to all elderly people as of right, was first raised in the French Revolution of 1789?99. It was however, to be another hundred years before Germany became the first country in the world to introduce pensions.
A further nine countries followed Germany?s lead, before the British government finally decided it was time to act.
With improvements in medical knowledge, people were living longer than ever before. Yet there was no state provision for old age. In 1906, almost 20% of the population over 65 were officially classed as paupers. Women fared particularly badly; around three-quarters of the recipients of ?outdoor relief? were elderly women. Old people who could not rely on the kindness of relatives to look after them often ended their days in the dreaded workhouse (pictured above). By the end of the Victorian period the largest group of workhouse inmates were the elderly.
Workhouse life was made as harsh and humiliating as possible, so that the able-bodied poor would apply for relief only as a last resort. But while the system was designed to discourage the work-shy, it also meant that the elderly, through no fault of their own, were also penalised. Aged pauper couples were not allowed to share a bedroom. Workhouse inmates had their clothes confiscated and were forced to wear uniform akin to prisoners. Many suffered from malnutrition: hardly surprising considering that the standard dinner was 6oz of bread and 2oz of cheese.
The scandalous treatment of the elderly in what was then the richest country on earth led to growing calls for state intervention. In 1891, the philanthropist Charles Booth published his first old-age pensions proposals. In 1899, a Parliamentary select committee investigated and advocated non-contributory old age pensions. In 1902, a campaign group called the National Committee of Organised Labour on Old Age Pensions was formed; its founder George Barnes, defeated the Conservative Cabinet minister Andrew Bonar Law in the 1906 general election.
The fiery Welsh Liberal Party politician Lloyd George, who became Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1908, had long advocated old age pensions and was determined to take action that, in his own words, would "lift the shadow of the workhouse from the homes of the poor". But though his Old Age Pensions Act was groundbreaking, its provisions could not be described as over-generous. A pension of up to 5s (25p) per week would be paid to single men and women only when they reached the age of 70; married couples were to receive about 7s6d (35p). The pensions, although non-contributory were means tested: anyone over 70 who had some form of income had this deducted from their pension. Only British subjects resident in the country for twenty years were eligible, anyone who had been in receipt of poor relief in the last twelve months or in prison within the previous ten years was barred. In addition, pensions were not available to those who were deemed to have habitually failed to work according to their ?ability, opportunity and need?.
As limited as the provisions were, Lloyd George?s proposals were for some, the thin end of the wedge. Old age pensions would prove ?profoundly demoralising? and would ?weaken the moral fibre of the nation?, critics like the Tory peer Lord Robert Cecil claimed.
But the government?s scheme proved hugely popular. The cry ?God bless that Lord George? was heard across the country when the

Voting Question: How can I change my attitude and style?
I just moved to a different state, and apparently people in a small town in South Carolina as they do in Manhattan, or act the same. Here it's cool to be a prep and all, but in a privet school in NY it seemed everyone was all strict and harsh, I think it might be the change from privet to public school. Most girls were tons of eyeliner and mascara, and have there hair dyed, I don't want to go to that extent, like dying my hair and wearing tons of make-up, but I really need help. Also with cloths. Here are some things that might help with your answers:
Light brown hair with natural blonde highlights
Blueish grey, greenish eyes(sometimes they look different colors, mostly blueish grey).
I have light/tan skin- French, Welsh, Gypsy decent
I'm 13
I have big eyes, but average set.
I have a high forehead
I have a Roman Nose
I'm 5 ft. 3inches
I am very thin(80 pounds)
I have long fingers, legs and hands
I tent to be slightly pessimistic and down in the dumps
Please reply quick with ideas for hair and make-up along with how I can change my attitude to be more like my peers.

Resolved Question: Does anyone else just not find Gavin and Stacy very funny?
Am I the only Welsh person who doesn't "get " Gavin and Stacey?
Everyone I know loves it, but I watched a couple of episodes and wasn't that impressed. It just didn't make me laugh.
My hubby is from Kent and I'm from Newport/Cardiff and the bit where Stacey moved to Essex to live with her inlaws reminded me of the time I tried (briefly) to live in Kent - which didn't last long as I was homesick. (Our romance wasn't "Long distance" like G&S though as he already lived in Cardiff when we met.)
Theres some great acting talent - Alison Steadman, Ruth Jones, Rob Brydon, James Corden etc so it was really promising at first, especially the idea of all the familiar sites of Barry Island (spent many a childhood summer day on that beach!) but I didn't find it that entertaining tbh - I was a bit disappointed
But TBH I wsn't that impressed and I just thought Nessa's character is really obnoxious! I don't see whats supposed to be so good about it? Perhaps I'm too old for its target audience (I'm 37)?
Bear, yes I do know women like Nessa and I don't like them! She's really obnoxious, lol!
I'd love to move back to Cardiff if the house prices weren't so damn high, I'm stuck in Caerphilthy until then.
Casper - I like decent stand up stuff like Mock the Week.
I didn't really like the Royle Family that much, it was funny in bits but a bit depressing lol
Yes I do know some characaters like the ones in the show but some are a bit stereotyped too, especially the Welsh ones.
